Pebble Beach is one of

the few U.S. Open courses that is available for public play, which in part has elevated its reputation as the most desired golf destination in the world. “Ask any golfer around

the world to name a golf course in the United States, and Pebble Beach will be the first thing they say,” said Tom Watson, co-designer of The Links at Spanish Bay, one of the four courses in the Pebble Beach Resorts

golf collection (the award- winning Spyglass Hill and Del Monte round out the options). “This place is that special.” Prior to the U.S. Open,

Pebble Beach Golf Links un- derwent various adjustments to enhance its challenges and playability. Under the direc- tion of Arnold Palmer, the course was strengthened and lengthened to 7,040 yards. With fairways now pushed closer to the coastline, the Pacific Ocean is no longer

pleted on four greens, 11 tees and 16 bunkers. In addi- tion, six holes have had trees added or repositioned to add strategic value to the layout. The USGA took advantage of the variety of tee options at Pebble Beach to shake things up a bit. The new tees at No. 3 lured numerous players to cut the corner over the trees—several of them going too far left and land- ing on the 16th green. On Sunday, the signature 7th hole, one of the most photographed in golf, became the shortest par 3 in U.S. Open history, playing to only 92 yards. Palmer’s goal was simple: maintain the integrity and historic shot values of an American jewel while chal- lenging today’s standard of players and equipment. That jewel sparkled as it tested, rewarded, confused and occasionally infuriated the best players in the world. Although Graeme

McDowell may have his name on the trophy and cashed the $1.35 million check, the big winner at the 2010 U.S. Open was Pebble Beach Golf Links itself. As always seems to be the case, the famous links produced more “only at Pebble Beach” moments that will live on as part of its legend and lore. Surely many golf guests of the resort now will channel their “inner Dustin Johnson” and try a back-handed chip from the greenside rough at No. 2, or hit a 3-iron from the forward tee at No. 4 and try to imagine how Johnson reached the green from 290 yards, uphill.
