Giving Thanks for a Great Year
By Vaughn Kezirian, NCGA President
The year has raced by with a tremendous amount of exciting golf events in Northern California. The Pebble Beach Company and Monterey Peninsula Foun- dation hosted two very spe- cial events with the AT&T National Pro-Am and the Homecare and Hospice First Tee Open, both featur- ing great weather and very fine fields of professionals, amateurs and juniors. The USGA-sponsored
U.S. Open at Pebble Beach was viewed around the world and showcased the Monterey area and North- ern California. Later this year the Champions Tour will host its season-ending event at Harding Park in San Francisco and another PGA Tour event was staged by Fry’s at CordeValle in San Martin. As Northern California golf enthusiasts we hope you are taking advantage of these events as spectators and seeing firsthand how good the players really are! I have attended three of the four NCGA Club Rep- resentative days and have enjoyed the opportunity of seeing our fine staff pres- ent the programs we offer. I very much appreciate the comments received from the many club officials who are the heart of our orga- nization; these individuals dedicate countless hours to the members of their clubs and without their efforts
the golf community would be “without.” When each of you gather and play in your next club event, take the time to thank those who have supported and man- aged the nearly 1,200 indi- vidual clubs that comprise NCGA membership. NCGA staff is working
diligently to create oppor- tunities at many member clubs in order for members to take advantage of fine golf courses at reduced prices. NCGA CEO Lyn Nelson pointed out at the club representative day hosted by Lake Merced Golf Club that if every NCGA member played one round at their member- owned golf courses, Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge, the courses would be without unused inventory. What an opportunity you are missing if you do not visit either of your member-owned golf courses. They are both in great condition and are a treat to play at very reason- able prices. The NCGA rules and
competition department will have administrated more than 425 tournament days for members by the end of this year including events for every segment of the golf community and the largest number of net events of any association in the country. Hopefully more members will take advan- tage of tournaments in the years to come. The NCGA
Junior Tour has been a great success and our plans are to expand the program next year to give more junior players the opportunity to compete in quality events. A special “thank you” needs to be given to mem- ber clubs who have offered support by making their courses available on week- ends. The success of the Junior Tour and its many players is directly attributed to the NCGA Foundation and its Youth on Course Program, which allows junior players access to rounds of golf at very af- fordable rates. The California State
Senior Amateur will be held at Fort Washington Golf and Country Club in Fresno the first weekend in November and a few weeks later the First An- nual NCGA Super Senior Championship will be held at Merced Golf and Coun- try Club. I look forward to working both events and
seeing some of the finest senior players in the state and country.
It has been a privilege
and great honor to have served as the president of the NCGA this past year. I humbly thank the many di- rectors who have supported me throughout the past nine years that I have spent as a director. The NCGA board is a very strong group of individuals with tremendous talent and diverse back- grounds with one common goal: to constantly work to improve the opportunities for amateur golf in Northern California. I plan to contin- ue to volunteer after I leave the board and will always be a member of the group of more than 250 NCGA tournament officials who I applaud for their countless hours of dedicated work; they are the source that makes our events special. Finally, please enjoy our
great game because there is none other like it.
Poppy Ridge
