Mesquite’s Magic

Want a Vegas experience with all the hustle but no bustle? BY SCOTT SEWARD

Consider a short drive northeast to Mesquite, straddling the Nevada/ Arizona border. Casinos, live entertainment, restaurants and terrifi c golf, it’s all here. The only thing missing is the traffi c.

The newest course in town, Conestoga GC, opened earlier this year. The Gary Panks design makes uses of stark contrast and rocky landscape in its more than 7,200 yards. The course is an amenity for residents of Sun City Mesquite, but newly-created packages via the Eureka Casino and Resort make the course accessible and affordable. The Eureka has seven courses within a

10-minute drive and serves as an excellent staging point for a Mesquite trip. Also close by is Falcon Ridge, featuring two nines of starkly different character. A mild front nine is a precursor to a back nine that closely resembles the course’s neighbor, Wolf Creek.

One of the state’s fi nest, Wolf Creek is the most visually intimidating course in the game. Wolf Creek’s relentless routing requires signing a waiver before procuring a cart. The intense landscape, as severe as any course in the country, is a photographer’s dream, presenting deep contrasts of red, brown and green. While the course can play every bit as diffi cult as it looks, if the right set of tees is chosen, it is quite manageable. CasaBlanca Resort and Casino has

two enjoyable courses. The fi rst course created in Mesquite, The Palms (1990), is a short drive away just across the Arizona border. Palm trees dot the prop- erty, which showcases a dramatic back nine with tee shots over deep canyons. CasaBlanca GC, on site at the resort,

resembles a Florida-style track, with water featured on 13 holes. Oasis GC’s Palmer and Canyon courses should also be on a golf itinerary. Spend the day at Mesquite’s only 36-hole facility taking in Arnold Palmer’s epony- mous course where the spectacular par-5 8th, with a drop-shot tee ball to a fair- way in a deep canyon, will linger in your memory. The other course, the Canyons, is less demanding and at 6,408 yards from the back tees, presents an opportu- nity to score.

It might be easy to characterize Mesquite as Vegas-lite, but the town is an enjoyable destination without consider- ing the Sin-City metaphor. Great golf and resort amenities abound in an unexpected location that has evolved exponentially in the 20 years since it opened its fi rst golf course.
