COX FARMS You have to wait until after Halloween to decimate your pumpkins by air gun or slingshot, but there are plenty of other activities at Cox Farm’s fall festival to keep you busy. Among them: slides, hayrides, farm animals, straw tunnels and entertainment. Stop by Friday or Saturday nights for a scary walk around the farm. Pre-picked pumpkins cost 59 cents a pound. HOLLIN FARMS Pick up your dinner along with pumpkins. Fall greens, tomatoes and green beans are ready to be plucked, and grass-fed beef and natural pork are sold on certain dates. The pumpkin patch’s 10 acres feature orange, specialty and mini pumpkins as well as gourds. Carving pumpkins cost 50 cents a pound; specialty pumpkins are 70 cents a pound. THE PUMPKIN PATCH AT HILL HIGH FARMS This land has been family owned and operated for more than 100 years, making it a Virginia Century Farm. Check out the straw maze, pass through the haunted house and see farm animals, then hop on a hayride to the pumpkin patch. Large pumpkins are pre-picked and cost 50 cents a pound; one small pick-your-own pumpkin is included in hayride. MARKER-MILLER ORCHARDS Pull a wagon to the patch and pick your favorite pumpkin. Perfect for the little ones, this farm also has a playground and a “cow train” that runs on weekends. Orange pumpkins cost 49 cents a pound; warty pumpkins are 59 cents a pound. Open Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday noon to 5 p.m.
