DeMatha, Good Counsel set to make their pitch
Top teams find that recruiting is an important part of their rivalry The recent history
BY JOSH BARR
ood Counsel Coach Bob Milloy had concerns be- fore heading to the prac-
tice field earlier this week. His second-ranked Falcons were preparing for their Washington Catholic Athletic Conference showdown with No. 14 De- Matha, but his players were distracted: The freshman team was playing DeMatha in the Olney school’s stadium. “It will ruin practice,” Milloy
said. “Everybody will be looking down the hill to see what’s going on, see who won the recruiting battle.” Such is the nature of this
rivalry, and of the recruiting battles between the area’s two preeminent private school foot- ball programs. Those recruiting battles have escalated sinceMil- loy was hired at Good Counsel prior to the 2001 season. In recent years, as the rivalry has intensified, so has the recruiting process, to the point that several involved believe it is beginning to mimic the recruiting of high school players by college coach- es.
Luring talented players to
campus does not guarantee suc- cess, but it certainly helps. In order to try to land the cream of the crop, the schools sometimes turn to famous alumni tomake a pitch. When DeMatha middle linebacker E.J. Levenberry — who starts as a sophomore — was choosing among DeMatha, Good Counsel and St. John’s two years ago, he received a voice mail from NFL running back Brian Westbook, telling him about the benefits of going to DeMatha. “That’s your pipeline, you’ve
got to have kids coming into your program,” said DeMatha Coach Bill McGregor, who de- clined to allow his players to be interviewed this week. “With WCAC recruiting rules now, technically you can’t get any- body after ninth grade.” League rules generally stipu-
late that any athlete transfer- ring in after the start of his sophomore year is ineligible for varsity competition for one year. The rule was implemented to reduce the number of transfers, andit has placed greaterempha- sis on securing players as fresh- men. Getting talented players early
has long been a hallmark of DeMatha, historically the area’s top athletic program. Good Counsel (4-1 overall, 2-0WCAC), however, has recently mounted quite a challenge. For the past six years, the schools’ varsity teams have played twice—once in the regular season and again in the WCAC title game. Often, in addition to a league champi- onship trophy, The Post’s No. 1 ranking has been at stake. Things are a bit different this
season. Neither team enters the gameundefeated. After losing to Gonzaga, 32-25, last week, De- Matha (3-2, 1-1) is trying to avoid falling back to .500 as well as losing consecutive games in the same season for the first time in 16 years. It’s not as if either program
needs any extra motivation for this game, but more fuel was added last winter when a furor
A glance at the past nine years of DeMatha-Good Counsel matchups: 2001: DeMatha, 21-14. Bob Milloy’s first game coaching Good Counsel against DeMatha was tied at 14 in the third quarter before current DeMatha assistant Elijah Brooks rushed for his third touchdown of the game.
2002: DeMatha, 13-11 in aWCAC semifinal. The teams’ regular season meeting was canceled because of the sniper attacks. In the playoffs, a penalty let Patrick Fisher have a second chance and the nephew of Stags Coach Bill McGregor made a game-winning 36-yard field goal with 19 seconds left.
2003: DeMatha, 48-17. Both teams entered 5-0, but this one was close only for a short while. The Stags led 21-0 then, after seeing the lead cut to 21-10, scored 27 consecutive points.
2004: Good Counsel, 31-21. A fake punt kept alive the game-clinching drive as the No. 2 Falcons beat the No. 1 Stags, ending their 17-game winning streak in the teams’ regular season meeting. DeMatha, 30-29. In theWCAC final, the Falcons were driving for the winning score in the closing minutes, but on an option run, the quarterback turned the wrong way and his errant pitch was recovered by DeMatha in a game that decided the area’s season-ending No. 1 ranking.
2005: DeMatha, 22-21. Another second-chance field goal, this one after time stopped because of an injured Good Counsel player following a blocked field goal, lifted the Stags to victory on the game’s final play. DeMatha, 21-20 (OT). In theWCAC final, the Falcons led 14-0 early, but fumbled near the goal line in the fourth quarter and missed an extra point off the upright in overtime as the Stags won their third consecutive one-point game in the series.
2006: DeMatha, 42-13. In the final regular season home game at Good Counsel’sWheaton location, both teams entered 9-0, but the Stags had no problems earning their 20th consecutive victory. DeMatha, 20-14 (OT). In theWCAC final, Chester Stewart threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Rodney McLeod in overtime and Good Counsel’s last chance ended on a fumbled snap.
2007: Good Counsel, 28-24. Tyler Campbell’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Kelsey Battle-Best was the game-winner. DeMatha, 12-7. In theWCAC final, Ashby Christian rushed for 133 yards and the Stags pitched a second-half shutout to win their fifth consecutive league title.
2008: Good Counsel, 42-21. Caleb Porzel scored three touchdowns in the first quarter as the Falcons won on ESPN2. DeMatha, 34-7. The rematch wasn’t close as Marcus Coker and Aaron Conaway each rushed for two touchdowns to lead the Stags to their sixth consecutiveWCAC title.
2009: DeMatha, 24-21. The Stags trailed 21-3 in the fourth quarter before Marcus Coker took over, rushing for three touchdowns including the game- winning 64-yarder with 1:07 left. It is considered the greatest comeback in DeMatha history. Good Counsel, 14-7. The Falcons won their firstWCAC championship.
arose at DeMatha about wheth- er it was acceptable for Stags offensive coordinatorChris Bau- cia to accept Good Counsel quarterback Zach Dancel in his private training sessions during the offseason. Some on theGood Counsel sideline wondered if DeMatha had inside informa- tion on their quarterback’s ten- dencies, while some atDeMatha worried that their secrets might be compromised. DeMatha Principal Dan McMahon be- lieved that one Stags assistant coach quit because of the issue. This week,Milloy walked into
his office one afternoon to find a message that top-ranked Ala- bama plans to send an assistant coach Friday night to scout and recruit players. (ArieKouandjio, an All-Met offensive lineman last year for DeMatha, is now a freshman at Alabama and his younger brother, Cyrus, is a highly recruited DeMatha se- nior.) Maryland Coach Ralph Friedgen, wanting to make a showy entrance, inquired about arriving at halftime in a helicop- ter; Milloy said Good Counsel President Art Raimo denied the request because “it’s already enough of a circus.” There might be added inten-
sity for this year’s game, the teams’ first meeting in Olney since ESPN2 broadcast their 2008 regular season game. De- Matha had won six consecutive
WCAC titles — including five championship game victories overGood Counsel— before the Falcons won 14-7 last year to claim their first league title. “I think that’s probably been mentioned over there once or twice this week,” Milloy said. “They had beaten us five [WCAC championship games] in a row and we snuck one out. No ques- tion about it, I’d be talking it up. I’msure CoachMcGregor has. “To me, it wouldn’t matter if
they were 5-0andwewere0-5 or ifwewere 5-0 and they were 0-5, it’s going to be a battle.” The preliminary competition
startedWednesday. Good Coun- sel won the freshman game, 22-0. DeMatha took the junior varsity, 28-0. On Friday night, those players will be in the stands as the main event takes place. “Everybody puts their whole
heart into this game,” said Good Counsel’s Vincent Croce, a standout tight end and line- backer. “Not that we don’t for other games, but we definitely do for this game. You’re going to be sore for days.”
