GREG SUTTON
Koi seven Koi ten
Last time we looked at this koi I wasnÕt concerned about the beni pattern in the middle of the koi. I am more concerned now. It is extremely soft / pale and this koi might have benefited from some colour food (although IÕm not a big believer). The Maruten spot is very good. It will still go into the mudpond but itÕs not such a long term prospect. However it has the body to be a big koi in the future. This koi currently measures 26cm.
Once Maurice had gone through all the
koi we chatted a bit more about a few things in relation to the top ten. I wanted to get his overall impressions of these koi as well as some of the others, plus of course the spawning in general.
Has it gone well do you think? Overall are you pleased? Yes I think so. IÕm always quite critical and I have friends and customers who tell me off for this, saying I should be proud of what I achieve. I am the type who always wants better though. I am certain weÕve hit the 40 to grow on longer.
How do you feel about the success rate of the top ten? Good. Around 60% success at this stage is pleasing, especially with Sanke. IÕd be looking to add in a few ÔextraÕ feature koi for when they come out of the mudpond in October 2010.
Which koi do you have in mind? The bowl of 11 which we were sorting through is probably the next lot IÕd be looking to follow. However there are too many to add into the article at this stage so the group shot (to the right) is ideal. WeÕll then see what they look like at Nisai.
They are all very good koi in that bunch. How do you feel they rate? I think some of them are actually ahead of the
Koi ten
top ten at this stage. ThatÕs koi breeding, itÕs full of surprises Ð risks and rewards on an enjoyable journey.
The percentage of males doesn’t seem to phase you? Not at all. Remember I look at this from a breederÕs point of view and quality counts first and foremost. Plus I want new parent stocks and the males are good candidates for this. I also feel male koi offer a good option for a lot of hobbyists.
thanks! I want to say a huge thanks to Maurice
and Lynn for another educational and fun day. It was good to see Gregaline again (IÕm never going to live that down). IÕm looking forward to part three already and seeing how they emerge from the mudpond. See you on one of your Open Days during the year no doubt.
