was it that simple? Sadly lack of oxygen was the root of the

ih i l

problem. This was mistaken for other possible causes and there were several contributing factors: • The product Rob used to remove the blanket weed on day one would have lowered the dissolved oxygen. It may well be a brand that is residual in the pond for some weeks.

• Rob’s pond was overstocked and the fish were eating high protein which creates ammonia. This has to be converted to nitrite and then to safer by-products. Oxygen is the major support for the biological life in the filter and it takes the oxygen from the water leaving koi whatever is left. This is referred to as the biological oxygen demand, or BOD.

• As the ambient temperature rose it progressively lowered dissolved oxygen levels in the water and that was why the koi went off their worms.

• No water parameters were tested despite all the new water.

• The introduction of chemicals caused fluctuations in the dissolved oxygen level. It was later calculated that the pond was under dosed with potassium permanganate – so more fish could have succumbed as they had not recovered from the previous treatment.

• The koi first in the swimming pool slightly improved as they were out of the chemical cocktail the two products close together

c eated Th crreated. There may have been m e ma ha e been more

oxygen in the pool which then decreased due to the number of fish.

• The neighbour suggested salt and, whilst koi should not live in salt, it is a good medicine for health problems. However it would not help mature new water. The two-bag dose level was also below anything effective in 5000 gallons.

• The use of tap water without dechlorination is very unwise, and this added to the problems for the koi.

• Tap water is cold and can chill the koi when the pond is at a higher water temperature. This may also trigger health problems.

the party’s over Although medications alleviate genuine

health problems they can, if introduced for all the wrong reasons as in this case, spell disaster. Dissolved oxygen levels are important all year round for good health and pond hygiene, but are far more critical to koi survival in summer. Most of the items Rob purchased were

unnecessary and much of the joint efforts of his friends were in vain, although the pool might make a good beer cooler (assuming it’s large enough for their needs). I suggested it would make a hospital in case of a koi emergency. Rob’s party never happened but he needs

no birthday to celebrate becoming a professional koi keeper with no time for anything else in life but a beer by the pond!
