PAULA REYNOLDS
A small selection of over 300 Jumbo Tosai from Sakai Hiroshima now on sale at the Barn
had once had white spot and, based on this rather flimsy expertise, he suggested trichodina was more likely as he could not see any tiny white spots. He went on to say that he needed potassium permanganate to treat trichodina. To Rob’s eye his koi had stopped
swimming around normally but he could not see irritation. However he had to agree that the previous treatment had not cured anything. So they set off for the aquatic centre again, this time for potassium permanganate, only to find it was not easy to obtain. This is because it can be used for certain illegal purposes and its sale is now controlled. Eventually they called on Bob who is
infamous in Essex for his ‘koi medicine chest’. They used his gram balance to weigh the dose level of potassium permanganate for Rob’s 5000-gallon pond.
trial and error Although they were uncertain as to the safe
interval between products, their anxiety fuelled the need for action. They mixed the treatment in a bucket and introduced it into the pond evenly, and then monitored the koi for many hours. The fish did not respond at all well. Jeff stayed the night to support his friend
and it was just as well – the following day they found two large koi dead on the bottom of the pond, and several on the surface struggling for survival. The rest were now far more lethargic than they had been at the onset of the problem, and most were now at the surface or under the waterfall. This behaviour suggested a gill problem to Jeff and he reasoned that living near farmland the culprit could be a pesticide. They roped in Rob’s neighbour Jack to
help and left him splashing a hose pipe over the pond to introduce lots of fresh water whilst Rob and Jeff, inspired into action, went shopping again. This time they bought
a garden swimming pool and a pump to circulate the water, as well as a few more beers! They found koi health problems not just extremely worrying, but very thirsty work, and the worst was yet to come.
a hard day’s night They erected the swimming pool on the
hottest day of the year and filled it and connected the pump. Then they caught all the koi and transferred them to the pool. This was much harder than they’d anticipated and it was dark before they had finished. Some of the first fish into the pool
struggled for buoyancy and then managed to swim upright. As as more joined them they could see the koi did not like life in the pool at all, so Rob and Jeff aimed to get them back in the pond as soon as possible. Both of them later told me they could never be koi farmers or dealers as it’s exhausting work catching and moving koi. Having drained the pond overnight they
then began to refill it, but they were amazed when they calculated it would take nearly two days to completely fill. They switched on the filter again as soon as the water was deep enough. Convinced that the problem was solved they celebrated this time with iced cold beer by the pond as dawn approached.
friends and neighbours Jack arrived with bacon sandwiches and
coffee and helped them net the koi again and return them to their pond. He suggested that salt should always be used when there is new water as it is a ‘pick me up’ for fish. So after yet another trip to the local aquatic centre they introduced two bags of tonic salt into Rob’s 5000-gallon pond and waited for developments. Bob, of medicine chest fame, popped
round to inspect progress and drop off some beer as he knew they would be too busy to stop for refreshments. It didn’t take long
