Context Clues Strategy Look for How Something Is Done

EXAMPLE CLUE

The people clapped and cheered loudly as they rejoiced.

The words clapped and cheered loudly tell how the people rejoiced.

Here is another strategy for using context clues to understand new words. We use it here to understand reassure from the essay.

READ

Read the sentence with the unknown word. Read a sentence or two around it.

A woman named Madame Carcas tried to reassure the people. “I have a plan,” she announced calmly.

LOOK

Look for context clues. What clues showing how something is done can you find?

The words calmly announced tell how Madame Carcas reassured the people.

THINK

Think about the context clues and other information you already know.

When I feel scared and someone talks to me in a calm voice, I feel less nervous.

PREDICT Predict a meaning for the word.

The word reassure probably means “to make others feel better about something.”

CHECK

Check the dictionary in the back of this book to be sure of the meaning.

The word reassure means “to restore confidence.”
