Have students demonstrate their knowledge of vocabulary words by writing a paragraph with one of the following titles:

Ask students to write a paragraph describing the kindest act they have ever done or have ever seen, using five vocabulary words from the word list on page 174.
26 ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
Tell students that while both words can be used in the sentence, each one changes the tone of the sentence. Read each word in the sentence and discuss how it affects the sentence. Ask the students why Kai would be determined to win the race. Then ask why he would be desperate to win the race. Possible responses: He might be determined if he had spent many hours practicing. He might be desperate if he had entered many races and never won before and this is his last chance.
Rephrase the Sayings (Review Lesson)
Explain to students that some of the unit vocabulary words can be found in well-known sayings, such as “Love conquers all,” which can mean “Love is very powerful.” Ask students to explain the meanings of the following sayings:
• One good turn deserves another. • Charity begins at home. • Misery loves company.

Denotation and Connotation (Lesson 1) Help students understand that while all words have literal or denotive meanings, some words also have suggested meanings, called connotations, that are not stated directly. To demonstrate, write this example on the board:
