Unlock the Meanings Teaching Tips
• Tell students that many languages share common word roots. The main, or root, part of the word remains the same throughout the languages, and just the beginnings and endings change to make them unique to a particular language.
• Point out that the English word anniversary means “the return of a special date every year.” In French, the word anniversaire can mean “anniversary” or “birthday.” These words share the Latin root ann, which means “year.”
• Ask students to look at the boxes at the top of page 166 and find the meaning of each root.
Knowing the meanings of different roots can help you figure out the meaning of new words. Several words you learned in Lesson 1 have a Latin root. Each root below is related to something good or bad.
