An Effective, Research-Based Vocabulary Program
ne of the most important aspects of language and literacy learning is building an extensive meaning vocabulary.
Research shows that the most effective way for students to develop this kind of extensive vocabulary involves
activating prior knowledge, using context clues strategies, and analyzing roots and other word parts to unlock word meanings. This is the foundation of Word Wisdom.
Teaching word-learning strategies instead of memorizing definitions results in greater word knowledge over time and improves reading comprehension and fluency.

The Tier Two academic words taught in Word Wisdom were carefully selected based on word frequency studies and these word qualities:
• Appear frequently across a wide variety of domains.
• Can be worked with in a variety of ways so students can make connections to other words and concepts.
• Provide precision and specificity for concepts students already understand. The words in each unit are also thematically linked based on best practices in vocabulary instruction.
