UP FRONTA LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Inspire, Teach, Mentor and Celebrate u I

t’s always an uplifting time when the team here at Ad- vanced Manufacturing Media gets together to review the candidates for our 30 Under 30 issue, which is now in its

third year. If you’ve ever worried about manufacturing’s cur- rent and future workforce—and I know that many people out there have and do—please take comfort in the hard work (it’s not just talent) that we highlight in this year’s special issue. Among the standouts: Christopher Tyler, 28, who has worked with the US Air Force on optimizing the topology of fl apping wing vehicles. Kathryn Tiller-Merk, 28, who is man- aging projects to close manufacturing technology gaps, such as those with intelligent machining. And Rachel Battershaw, 23, who is Spirit AeroSystems’ principal investigator on two major programs, the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787. Their stories hold many lessons about how to inspire

more students to choose an exciting career in manufacturing. Aside from early interest in LEGOs, robotics and tinker- ing, there’s also the lesson that this generation is driven by a strong desire to help others. Take Barry Belmont, 27, at the University of Michigan, who said, “If you’re not solving a problem that affects people, it’s kind of not worth solving.”

Not surprisingly, he’s interested in biomedical manufacturing and has already developed a wearable device. As you read about our honorees, please keep in mind any young people you know who are deserving of consideration for next year’s issue. We believe recognizing and celebrat- ing these young men and women can attract more like them to manufacturing. I’d also like to give special thanks to Kelly Services Inc. for its sponsorship of this important project. Also in this issue, we have a lineup of other outstanding content. That includes a special section on lasers, which have become one of the most versatile precision tools used throughout manufacturing, whether they are cutting and welding or marking and 3D printing. Senior Editor James Lorincz provides an update on what’s new with fi ve- axis machining centers. And in case you couldn’t attend RAPID 2015, Senior Editor Bill Koenig provides some highlights in this month’s NewsDesk. Finally, in Workforce Pipeline, SME Executive Director & CEO Jeffrey M. Krause writes about all the wonderful things our organization does to support and grow the manufacturing workforce of the future.
