each holder handled only one specifi c tool diameter, and they were unable to handle some of the shop’s milling operations. “With PG, we get the low runout of heat shrink together with high clamping force that’s equal to, if not better, than hydraulic holder systems,” said Engle. “And all in a versatile system that accommodates different size tool shank diam- eters, which saves in overall tooling inventory.” National Jet’s PGU 9500 press unit for its PG holders is an automatic style. All the shop’s CNC machinists use it and set up their own tooling. The system, according to National Jet machinists Anthony Hillegas and Wayne Moyer, is a very straightforward system, easy to use and maintain. The two machinists use Rego-Fix tooling on a daily basis to hold drills, mills, and countersinks.

Ed Engle (left), machinist at National Jet, and Ben Odom, general manager, with National Jet’s Rego-Fix PG toolholding system that uses the mechanical properties of the holder material to generate the tremendous gripping force with run-out below 0.0001" (0.003 mm).

In addition to offering full machining services, National

Jet produces micro drills—both for commercial sale and its own internal use. These are standard two-fl ute spade drills typically produced from carbide and/or high-speed steel (HSS) blanks.

“While the in-house-produced drills play a key role, the success of our micro-drilling operations hinges more on the actual speeds and feeds at which we run the drills. And those particular parameters are highly proprietary,” said Samuel Griffi th, special projects engineer at National Jet. “We didn’t learn micro drilling overnight. It took years of trial and error, which is why we are extremely protective of our intellectual property.”
