SHOP SOLUTIONS Continued from P40 A relatively new industry segment for the shop is the
production of 3D printer parts. For one customer, National Jet makes seven components, one of which is a nozzle with a 0.010" (0.25-mm) diameter drilled hole. The shop’s ability to drill those holes is the reason it got the job to produce the entire part.
“Customer expectations have changed over the years.
What were once jobs that simply called for micro -drilled holes, now involve jobs from customers looking for more fully integrated suppliers that can produce parts complete—all the machining and micro drilling,” said Odom. “This means we, in turn, need suppliers, like Rego-Fix, that can provide the high levels of technology we need to complete those jobs with which we are tasked. We also want reliability and dependability from those suppliers, and Rego-Fix has been extremely important to us in terms of our precision drilling and milling operations.” For more information from Rego-Fix Tool Corp., go to

Edge Prep Measured, Tool Life’s Extended
T
ool life, geometry, and stability largely depend on proper edge preparation. Tool Flo, located in Houston, TX, is a manufacturer of carbide cutting tools such as inserts for threading, turning, and milling. The company uses optical 3D measurement systems from Alicona Corp. (Bartlett, IL) in the quality assurance of inserts. “Alicona’s systems allow us to carry out high-resolution measurements of the geometry of cutting edges and the chipping and roughness of cutting surfaces in a fully automated process free of possible user errors,” President Dennis Flolo said.
President Dennis Flolo credits Alicona‘s fully automatic optical 3D measurement system with eliminating all sources of user error in measuring its carbide cutting tool inserts.
Edge preparation reduces chipping and increases edge
stability. This improves the edge strength of precision tools. As a result, tool life and process reliability of machining tools are enhanced, which in turn leads to better workpiece quality. Tool Flo uses the EdgeMaster, Alicona‘s optical 3D cutting-edge measurement system in the production- integrated quality assurance of inserts. Alicona’s tool measurement systems are used in mold and tool making in particular due to their capability for repeatable and trace- able high-resolution measurements of complex geometries, small radii, and steep fl anks. This also makes them the perfect tools for verifying edge geometries. Since its founding in 1978, Tool Flo has become a fi rst- rate supplier of carbide tools for threading, grooving, turning,
