Unbeknownst to me, I was voted by Lacrosse Magazine as the preseason player of the year back in 1996. I was heading into my sophomore season at Syracuse. It was early spring, and I get a call on my answering machine from Coach [Roy] Simmons, asking to come down to his offi ce. He sits down across from me, looks at me for a few seconds and tosses a magazine across the desk. On the front of it was me and it said, “Casey Powell: Preseason Player of the Year.” I thought, “That’s cool.” Then he said something I’ll never forget: “From shiny rays of sunshine come tiny blades of grass, today a college hero, tomorrow a horse’s ass.” Keep working hard, enjoy
