One of the primary injuries in lacrosse is to the ankle.

Taping and traditional bracing limit performance and hinder speed, agility and range of motion.

Taping and traditional bracing increase the risk of injury to the knee and hip by transferring torque.

Taping is time consuming and costly.

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT How to set up and execute a two-man game

M

uch has been made of the two-man game and its various iterations. Teams

adopt this strategy to create match-up problems, communication breakdowns and scoring chances. To incorporate this technique into

an existing offense (such as a 1-3-2 or 2-3-1) or build an entire system that revolves around it (like the Open 2 Circle Pairs), players fi rst must master setup and execution.

Create space and element of surprise The ball carrier

gets high and/or wide of the goal to create space and momentum going into his dodge. He

also should initiate moving

away from the pick so his defender cannot see the off-ball pick in his peripheral vision. The off-ball player should cut

hard to goal before setting the pick, forcing the defender to honor that threat and perhaps make him late communicating the pick. The “pass-down pick-down” technique can be effective, but a pick that originates from adjacent is easier to thwart. A pick from two passes away is less predictable.

HORIZONTAL PICKS

Angle of approach Set picks in spots that allow the

ball carrier to continue a downhill path toward the goal — at least 45 degrees at the high wing, with a fl atter trajectory from the low wing.

Read , react and re-pick At the point of engagement, the

defense has two options: stay or switch. If they stay, the offensive players must create an airtight seal with a shoulder-to-shoulder pick. If they switch, use a pick-and-slip. The off-ball player slows down during the approach and slips between the two defenders into open space. If it does not yield any results, roll back and establish another intersection point.

Practice it For horizontal picks, lay cones

across the width of the fi eld 8 to-10 yards above the goal. Players must execute the pick play in the high wings and shoot before the boundary. This goes well with a 1-3-2 or 2-2-2 offense. For vertical picks, align the cones down the middle of the fi eld lengthwise, limiting players to one side of the fi eld. This corresponds to 2-1- 3 Umbrella and 2 Circle sets.
