the story of lacrosse goalie Andrew Goldstein, a former Dartmouth All-American who became the first openly gay pro team athlete with the Long Island Lizards. Ten years after Goldstein’s story aired on “SportsCenter,” it may have saved 12-year-old lacrosse player Braeden Lange's life. In February, Lange told friends and family that he is gay. He struggled with acceptance and had thoughts of suicide before striking up a friendship with Goldstein, who gave Lange his worn Lizards helmet as a symbol. “I stand with you,” Goldstein said in a video. In May, Goldstein and Seattle- area coach Nick Welton organized The Courage Game in conjunction with the NCAA championships in Philadelphia. Nearly 100 players showed up to honor Lange. Supporters included US Lacrosse CEO Steve Stenersen, Virginia coach Dom Starsia, MLL MVP Greg Gurenlian and Pennsylvania state representative Brian Sims. “This could really help the gay


youth,” Lange said. “They should know the lacrosse community stands with them and that if they’re ready to come out, they don’t have to be afraid, because they’ll accept them for who they are and if they’re playing lacrosse, that’s all that really matters.”
