EXCLUSIVITY IS KEY
Shove Park is pretty small. The indoor part of it was a polished cement floor. Outsiders, meaning if you weren’t a West Genesee lacrosse player, were not allowed. Occasionally they’d allow a couple outsiders. I’ve only had the opportunity to play there once. The players from arguably the best high school program in history have played and trained there. It’s captured a lot of history. What Mike Messere, who runs the program there, has done for lacrosse is pretty remarkable. It’s one of those places that’s not publicized or talked about. You can’t pay to get in it. It’s an honor to play there. That’s how I felt.

CLOSE TO MY HEART
Lake Placid is my favorite, no
doubt. It’s close to where I’m from. There are a lot of Syracuse people and it’s arguably where the game originated, in that general area. There is something special about it. It’s the end of the summer. I’ve had some of my greatest lacrosse memories up there because I’ve had a chance to play with my old teammates and my brothers. Playing with my brothers there, and in front of my family, has made it extremely special.

COLLEGE VENUES Syracuse Hobart UMass Maryland Virginia
BLOOD
FEUDS We’d
always play
Hobart on a Tuesday night because
they were 50 miles down the road. And we’d play for the Simmons-Krause trophy. There’s a long history back to the ’70s and ’80s when Hobart was kicking Syracuse’s butt.
Then the mid-’90s hit and Syracuse turns it on. All of a sudden, it’s a different story. The rivalry was hot. Coach Simmons
was always most intense in the Hobart game. As a freshman, we played there and won 18-17 and I scored the game-winner in overtime. Earlier in the game, somebody threw a fish at me from the field. This big walleye hit me in the back. There were always stories that they didn’t mow the lawn because they were trying to slow Syracuse down. It was fun. It wasn’t a huge overwhelming stadium. It was just lacrosse. The weather was always iffy. The game was always intense.
At UMass, the fans would always throw oranges at us. One game they announced, “If any more UMass fans throw oranges on the field, the home team will be assessed a 30-second penalty.” A savvy Syracuse fan, Jerry Nicholson, bought an orange on the way. He took it out of his pocket, chucked it and of course, a flag went down. Outsmarted them.
