IGNATIAN HERITAGE MONTH
S 4 LOYOLA UNIVERSITY CHICAGO
t. Ignatius of Loyola encouraged his followers to seek God in all things, to serve those in need, and to be- come people for others. His mission can be seen in everything we do at
Loyola—and it’s this living legacy that we cel- ebrate throughout Ignatian Heritage Month, held each November. This year’s events carried special meaning because it is the 25th anniversary of the deaths of the Salvadoran martyrs, who were killed for working against injustice. Read more about the martyrs and their legacy on page 6.
THE RINGING OF THE BELLS
On November 16, the bells of Madonna della Strada rang for the first time in honor of the 25th anniversary of the deaths of the Salvadoran martyrs. November also marked the 75th anniversary of the dedica- tion of the Madonna della Strada Chapel. The recently installed bells completed the vision of James Mertz, S.J., who led the effort to build the chapel in the 1930s. To install the bells, scaffolding was erected around the tower, a section of wall removed, and the bells and frame installed. The wall was then replaced. Watch a video of the installa- tion at
LUC.edu/MDSbells.
