A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT DEAR LOYOLANS,

the 200th anniversary of the Restoration of the Society of Jesus, the 100th anniversaries of our schools of social work and continuing and professional studies, and the 50th anniversary of our Institute of Pastoral Studies. Additionally, this fall we marked the 75th anniversary of the dedication of the Madonna della Strada Chapel. In celebration, four bells were installed to complete the original vision Fr. Mertz had for the chapel and on November 16, 2014, the 25th anniversary of the deaths of the Salvadoran martyrs, the bells rang out for the first time. This year, Loyola continued to enjoy a strong financial

I

performance. In the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2014, the University generated an operating surplus of $35 million and an overall increase in net assets of $111 million that was driven primarily by strong investment returns on the long-term portfolio of $75 million. Funds from the operating surplus were set aside for future debt repayments, capital projects, and to establish quasi- endowments to fund scholarships and attract talented faculty to Loyola with endowed professorships. The University spent approximately $112 million on capital expenditures, primarily at the Lake Shore Campus. Our endowment reached $539 million, its highest level ever, thanks to generous contributions from our donors, as well as strong returns on investment. Ensuring that a Loyola education is accessible to all

students continues to be a priority. Last year, we made additional progress toward the $80 million goal of Access to Excellence: The Campaign for Scholarships. To date, we have achieved $53.4 million, and donors have created 160 new endowed scholarships as part of the campaign. During fiscal year 2014, 2,400 alumni and friends gave to scholarships for our students, including an anonymous $2 million commitment supporting the School of Education. am pleased to share an annual update with you on the state of the University. 2014 is an important year for Loyola University Chicago and for the Jesuit order. This year marks

This year, we also wrapped up our Insieme per il futuro,

the Campaign for the John Felice Rome Center, which exceeded its $4 million goal for outright gifts to the center. Donors invested in increased scholarship support, funds for student travel and service programs, and campus improvements including the Anthony and Susan Brazier Piazza Information Commons, a remodeled mensa/ cafeteria, new conference room, coffee bar, and more. Building on the success of Insieme, we now look ahead to Phase II of enhancing the Rome Center experience with Avanti! To learn more about the campaign and our Alumni Wall initiative, please visit LUC.edu/tilesforrome. At our Water Tower Campus, construction continues on

the new home for the Quinlan School of Business, the John and Kathy Schreiber Center. In March, we announced that alumnus John G. Schreiber had given $10 million to the Quinlan School of Business. We are grateful to John and Kathy Schreiber for their extraordinary support of this innovative learning environment. At the Health Sciences Campus, the Center for Translational Research— a collaboration between Loyola University Chicago, Loyola University Health System, and Trinity Health that will transform Catholic health care education and research—is on track to open April 2016. The construction of these two marquee facilities, along

with the progress we have made on all our campuses over the last five years, will bring our 2009–2014 strategic plan to completion. Planning is underway for our new five-year strategic plan that will look to our Jesuit, Catholic social justice mission to guide the University toward creating a more just, humane, and sustainable world. We will share more details as the plan develops. I wish you and yours a blessed and peaceful holiday.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Garanzini, S.J.
