It must be noted that an individual who is eligible for both the Men’s Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary may have memberships in both. All eligible men and women seeking membership in the organization must fi ll out an application, be investigated, voted on and accepted. All accepted members in good standing have all the same rights and privileges.


Q: Can someone who is eligible for the VFW join the Auxiliary?


A: An individual who is eligible for the Veterans of Foreign Wars is NOT eligible for the VFW Auxiliary.


Q: How does this affect same-sex marriages?


A: Same-sex marriage has been accepted for many years (based on each state’s law), and is now extended to all same-sex marriages because of the Supreme Court’s ruling making same-sex marriage legal nationwide.


Q: What do I do with my current membership card?


A: All current membership cards, both Life and Annual, are valid and will remain so.


Q: I don’t see step or half relations listed in the eligibility anymore. Are they still eligible?


A: Per VFW ruling, there is to be no distinction between full relations and step/half relations. Therefore, they are eligible per the relationships listed in the National Bylaws.


Q: Are foster relations eligible?


A: No, in 2014, foster relations were removed from eligibility.


VFW Auxiliary National Secretary-Treasurer Jan Owens and VFW Commander-in-Chief John A. Biedrzycki Jr. unveil the new, offi cial VFW Auxiliary charter.


Q: Similarly, what if any member joins the VFW Auxiliary from now forward but then attains VFW eligibility?


A: That person must forfeit their Auxiliary eligibility and join the VFW. In both cases, a Life Member would be due a prorated refund on his or her Life Membership per Bylaws Section 105.

Q: Is an Auxiliary member’s spouse or family member automatically eligible to join now?


A: No. Each and every Auxiliary member must be related within 2 degrees of consanguinity of a VFW-eligible veteran.


Q: If a person joined the Ladies Auxiliary VFW prior to August 21, 2015, as a Life Member but then attained VFW eligibility during her membership in the Ladies Auxiliary VFW, can she join the VFW and have dual eligibility?


A: No, she must forfeit her VFW Auxiliary membership and join the VFW.


Note: Dual members of the Auxiliary and VFW prior to August 21, 2015, may retain their dual membership as long as they are in good standing with both organizations.
