Make holidays brighter for veterans ‘Tis the season for spending

quality time with family and friends, buying presents and decking the tree, but one of the best gifts you can give over the holidays is spending time with our veterans. Here are some great ideas for

brightening veterans’ holidays from some of our National Program Ambassadors.

MARY STROUD Americanism Ambassador:

• On Veterans Day, bake patriotic cupcakes (include some sugar-free) and take them to your VA Hospital or to veterans at local nursing homes.

• On T anksgiving, invite local veterans and their families for a free T anksgiving meal as a way to thank them for their service.

• At Christmastime, team up with your local youth groups and choirs to go to the VA Hospital or nursing home to perform traditional carols.

BARBARA MELNICK Chief of Staff /Extension Ambassador:

• Host a T anksgiving/ Christmas party and get the veterans and their families together. Get spouses, kids and grandkids to join – make it fun.

• Create a Healthy Communication phone/text tree – fi nd out what your veterans want or need in your area. Communication is the key to being helpful. Go door to door if you can in your area. Meet your neighbors.

GRACE MATZ Hospital Ambassador:

• Visit veterans – take a card or fl ag and most importantly, a smile!

• Decorate a small tree with “Buddy”® Poppies for Christmas.

• Give hand-made crafts to veterans. 14 | VFW Auxiliary Magazine
