PART 2
The Next Generation Assessment Edition of Strategies for Writers teaches students to apply writing skills on performance-based next generation writing assessments. To prepare, students
• learn to analyze assessment tasks using student models of Close Reading and Writing to Multiple Sources assessments in the text types.
• practice taking technology-based, constructed-response assessments.
Now that Part 1 is complete, it’s time to write the editorial. Usually you will complete Part 1 on one day and Part 2 on the next day. The directions for Part 2 are longer than Part 1 and continue on a second page. So remember to read the directions carefully and ask questions if you don’t understand.
PART 2: Writing to Multiple Sources
Setup You will now have 70 minutes to review your notes and sources, plan, draft, and revise an editorial. You may use your notes and refer to the sources. You may also refer to the answers you wrote to questions in Part 1, but you cannot change those answers. Now read your assignment and the information about how your editorial will be scored. Then begin your work.
Your Assignment
A new park designed for bird watching will be opening in your community soon. The city council is considering naming the park after Roger Tory Peterson, John James Audubon, or Harriet Hemenway and Minna Hall. Your assignment is to write an editorial for the newspaper explaining which of the three choices is best and why. Support your position with concrete details and examples from each of the sources you have examined. The audience for your editorial will be the people in your community.
