bourbon should you use? This year, our bartenders seem to think Bulleit, with Maker’s Mark the second choice. Woodford Reserve beat off a huddle of other brands jostling for third pick.

The Mint Julep is one of the old American cocktails, so probably best to make it with a bourbon that’s been around a bit. Maker’s Mark is the choice in 22% of the world’s best bars, just ahead of Diageo’s newbie Bulleit. Buffalo Trace heads the chasing pack. For a Manhattan we are looking for rye. Few are known for this grain more than Rittenhouse, which took about 40% of the vote. Bulleit Rye came second with 19% and Maker’s Mark – a bourbon without any rye in the mash bill – took third.
The Sazerac is mostly thought of as a brandy cocktail, but it has morphed and at the world’s best bars Rittenhouse got the vote in about a quarter. Sazerac was second with 16% and Bulleit had 14%. Cognac just isn’t cutting the cool right.

BRANDY COCKTAILS
t says something of bartenders’ warmth for Pierre Ferrand that it is the brand of choice in the Sidecar, the most popular brandy cocktail at the world’s best bars. What’s more impressive is it has got the nod ahead of the all-pervading Hennessy.
I
But Hennessy has its revenge. With about a quarter of the vote Hennessy is the brandy of choice in the Brandy Julep, with Pierre Ferrand exponents making up 20% of the bars polled. Martell came in a solid third.
