t doesn’t seem to matter what the question is, the answer is Tanqueray. For this list we asked our 100 bars to rank their
HAVANA CLUB F7OUR ROSES 8
HENDRICK’S 9
PLANTATION
10 GEORGE DICKEL
number one best selling brand across all spirits. Gin is in, and as the darling of the category – and backed by Diageo’s formidable powers of persuasion – it was almost a given that Tanqueray would storm home. Indeed, in about 20% of the bars polled, it was named the no.1 best-selling brand. Given that these bar owners and bartenders have the freedom, and expectation, to offer the best house pours on the market, this makes Tanqueray the no.1 brand at the sharp end of the bar business.
London’s Nightjar, Munich’s Bar Gabanyi, Mexico City’s Jules Basement, Singapore’s Nutmeg & Clove and Santiago’s The White Rabbit are just a few of the bars that attest to Tanqueray’s selling power. In second, we have
another Diageo brand with Ketel One. Vodka may not be elite bartenders’ first love but it pays the bills. Amsterdam’s Door 74 and London’s Worship Street Whistling Shop had it at number one, while Nottingham Forest’s Dario Comini says Ketel One is his favourite brand and the top seller at his bar. Pernod Ricard’s first
entry into the Best Sellers list comes in the form of Beefeater, a London Dry that impresses bartenders as much on classic junipery taste as it does on price. London’s 69 Colebrooke Row, Duke’s and Hawksmoor Spitalfields, home of World Class UK winner Ali Reynolds, say Beefeater is their number one spirit brand, as do Copper Bay in Paris and Vancouver’s Keefer Bar. Bacardi has strong partnerships with the world’s best bars, and its eponymous rum found itself a top seller in 6% of our polled bars. The eight-year-old
Bacardi has shown this brand is more than just ordinary juice. Absolut, in classic and Elyx form, was the best-selling spirit in about 5% of bars polled. Havana Club is ever-present and to many bartenders the only choice for Cuban cocktails (see page 41). In bars that do a lot of gin business, Hendrick’s has gone from trending to best selling. This year Four Roses and Plantation make their first entrances in the list. They may not do big volumes everywhere, but they are the top sellers in a handful of our polled bars.
