he 5th EOS Topical Meeting on Terahertz Science & Technology (TST 2016) was organised in Pécs, Hungary on 8-11 May. The meeting took place in the ballroom
of hotel Palatinus, which is an Art-Nouveau masterpiece in the historic centre of Pécs. The meeting consisted of high quality presentations and provided an interesting discussion and networking platform for both students and senior scientists. The one hour keynote speech was given by Rupert Huber (University of Regensburg, Germany), while three 45-minute long Master Class Talks aimed at graduate students were given by Alfred Leitenstorfer (University of Konstanz, Germany), Franz Kärtner (MIT, USA and CFEL, Germany) and Joo-Hiuk Son (University of Seoul, South Korea). In addition, 10 invited talks were given. The best student talk and the best student poster awards went to Janine Keller (ETH Zürich, Switzerland) for the talk, Ultra-strong coupling with spin-split heavy-hole cyclotron resonances in strained Ge quantum wells; and to Stefan Busch for the poster, Tunable dispersion prism for THz-frequencies made by 3D printing, Congratulations!
The meeting attracted 59 participants and this successful event was made possible by the efforts of general chairs János Hebling (University of Pécs, Hungary) and Alessandro Tredicucci (NEST, CNR Istituto Nanoscienze and Dipartimento di Fisica, University of Pisa, Italy), and coordinator of local organisation József András Fülöp (University of Pécs, Hungary). Special thanks to all of them!
Optical Coatings for Laser Applications (OCLA 2016) Conference, Buchs St Gallen, Switzerland. The Alpine Rhine‐valley, located between Liechtenstein and Switzerland, has a long tradition in the manufacture of optical coatings and deposition technology and is still of strong importance to the field today, with a large variety of companies in the region involved in the process chain. To support the regional industry cluster, a research centre for optical high‐end coatings, ‘RhySearch’, has been established in Buchs St Gallen, Switzerland. RhySearch has invested extensively in high‐end optical analytics and deposition technology, such as a laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) test bench, a cavity ring down (CRD) system and a dual ion beam sputter (DIBS) system. As inauguration to this new research centre

Fifth EOS Topical Meeting on Terahertz Science & Technology (TST 2016)
The TST meeting took place in Pécs, Hungary
a workshop dedicated to Optical Coatings for Laser Applications was held in 2015 for the first time. The workshop met with positive response and great interest from research and industry and it was consequently decided to make it a yearly event. The OCLA 2016 workshop will take place on Thursday 9 June 2016 at the NTB University of Applied Sciences in Buchs St. Gallen, Switzerland. The workshop, jointly sponsored by the European Optical Society, NTB, Swissphotonics and the RhySearch innovation and research centre, is geared towards technically interested engineers and scientists working with laser optics, high‐end optical thin film deposition and characterisation. In order to cover the various subjects involved in the manufacture of high‐end optical coatings, a variety of presentations by highly reputed speakers in the fields of optical coatings, laser technology, LIDT measurement and coating characterisation are held every year. The keynote lecture at this year’s workshop,
The keynote

by Dr Marwan Abdou‐Ahmed from the University of Stuttgart, gives an overview of the application of grating waveguide structures, or grating mirrors, in high‐power laser systems. In his talk, Dr Laurent Gallais from the Fresnel Institute in Marseille addresses the complex subject of laser damage resistance of optical coatings in the sub‐picosecond regime and techniques for improving the laser damage threshold. The
topic of current limits and challenges faced by dispersive optics will be presented by Dr Vladimir Pervak (Ludwig‐Maximilian‐University, Munich). Professor Dr Markus Aspelmeyer from Vienna University will give an interesting insight into the use of crystalline coatings in optical coating technology, while Professor Dr Patrik Hoffmann (EMPA, Thun, Switzerland) discusses the critical influence of contamination on deep ultraviolet laser mirrors and the ideal coatings for laser processing applications. Several presentations will also focus on deposition techniques used in the production of high‐quality optical coatings. Dr Thorsten Best (Optics Balzers Jena) will give insight into the manufacturing of high performance laser mirrors using Plasma‐Assisted Reactive Magnetron Sputter deposition. Dr Adriana Szeghalmi (Friedrich Schiller University, Jena) will discuss results from the atomic layer deposition of optical coatings, a coating technology which is becoming increasingly interesting for industrial applications. The use of state‐of‐the‐art ion‐beam sputter deposition technology for manufacturing high‐performance optical coatings will be presented by Dr Kai Starke from Cutting Edge Coatings. The current developments in the RhySearch coating lab, focusing on the characterisation and manufacture of high‐end optical coatings, will be presented by Dr Roelene Botha (RhySearch). The event concludes with a brainstorming event led by Dr Hans Ebinger from RhySearch, supported by Dr Carsten Ziolek (Institute PWO, NTB) and Professor Dr Markus Michler (Institute MNT, NTB). This offers the opportunity for industry and research groups to share ideas, have
stimulating discussions and for the research partners to better understand the needs of the industry partners. The discussions will be continued during the networking breaks and Swissphotonics sponsored aperitif and lunch. The event aids in bridging the gap between academic research, commercial application and end user needs and will continue to do so in coming years under the patronage of the European Optical Society, Swissphotonics and RhySearch.
