The global photonics marketplace

I’m sure most of us working in photonics have noticed that 2016 has been a busy year for mergers and acquisitions, the most notable being Coherent’s purchase of Rofin and MKS Instruments’ acquisition of Newport. Is this trend going to continue? And what does it mean for the photonics industry? On page 12, Thierry Robin and Jacques Cochard, from market research firm Tematys, argue that consolidation is a natural part of how a market grows and diversifies.

A more immediate matter that could impact the photonics sector is the UK’s EU referendum on 23 June. Dr John Lincoln, from the UK's Photonics Leadership Group, says on page 10 that, because photonics thrives on a global market place and free trade, a Brexit would have a significant impact on the market – not just in the UK, but globally. Also in this issue, Professor Ben Eggleton discusses the launch of Australia's first nanoscience research centre and how it could boost Australian photonics (page 28). There are also feature articles on the development of smaller and better-performing endoscopes (page 14); the sensor technology helping to improve city infrastructure (page 22); and how optics and photonics are aiding space programmes (page 18).
