Achievements UK Pavillion at SMM Germany 2016
The above engagement ensures SMI plays a key role in representing to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) the business interests of members and we maintain a leading position on a variety of fronts. In addition to our engagement with BEIS a number of members participate in the Marine Industries Liaison Group of the Marine Science Coordination Committee (MSCC) in the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), and SMI’s Chief Executive also sits on the MSCC International Working Group. SMI maintains links with the House of Commons through its three Honorary Vice Presidents: Mrs Flick Drummond (Conservative), Mr Jim Fitzpatrick (Labour) and Ms Carol Monaghan (Scottish Nationalist Party). We are grateful to them for their assistance and interest in our affairs throughout the year. These links enable us to ensure we have access to all levels of government and parliament.
During the year SMI was invited to be an organising association for London International Shipping Week, which is due to take place from 11‐15 September 2017. The third in the series will feature over 160 industry functions and networking opportunities in London, attended by leaders across all sectors of the international shipping industry.
Improving the Business Environment
In April 2016 SMI became a full member of Maritime UK which brings together the UK's shipping, ports, maritime engineering and business services sectors. Maritime UK has an expanded role to drive forward an ambitious agenda for growth, to promote the UK as a world‐class maritime centre and to unite the maritime community in meeting the challenges of tomorrow. The body is tasked with being the industry umbrella organisation envisaged in the government’s Maritime Growth Strategy which was launched in 2015.
SMI and a number of our members also play leading roles in the Marine Industries Leadership Council (MILC), which is a joint initiative with the UK government designed to spearhead growth in the engineering sector in the current decade. The MILC is jointly chaired by the Minister for Business and Energy, Mr Jesse Norman MP, and, Mr Gregory Darling, Chairman of Gardline Group and a SMI Board member. The industry Vice Chair is Mr John Hudson (BAE Systems) who also sits on the SMI Board. The SMI Board Chairman, Mr Peter French (BMT Group), is also a member of that Council, supported by SMI’s Chief Executive who is the trade association Vice Chair of the MILC.
A development during the year was that it was agreed that the working groups of the MILC would also report to the Board of Maritime UK and the membership of those working groups was expanded to include representatives from Maritime UK member organisations which do not sit on the MILC. Mr Russell Gould (Kelvin Hughes), who also sits on the SMI Board, continued as Chair of the Export Group and SMI’s Chief Executive continued as Chair of the Technology & Innovation Group.
It was reported last year that SMI had signed a tri‐partite Memorandum of Understanding on policy coordination with British Marine and the UK Chamber of Shipping. The chief executives of the three associations meet on a regular basis to exchange information on policy actions, thereby seeking mutually beneficial outcomes in the interests of our members.
In addition to those mentioned above, SMI maintains influence on an extensive number of bodies that have bearing on the maritime sector. The list includes, but is not restricted to the Defence Industries Council; the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee; the All Party Parliamentary Maritime and Ports Group; the Foundation for Science & Technology; the SME Forum of the Defence Suppliers’ Forum, where Board member, Mr Ed Bates (Aish Technologies), represents SMI; and the Aerospace Defence, Marine and Security Industry Leadership Group of Scottish Enterprise, which is attended by SMI’s Chief Executive.
In recognition of the importance of maritime autonomous systems (MAS) as an emerging area of future business, the SMI Board agreed to the formation of this sixth interest group to cover this area. An inaugural meeting confirmed a large number of members willing to contribute their time resource to a new MAS Council which met for the first time on 30 March 2016 and appointed Mr Dan Hook, Manging Director of ASV Global Ltd, as its first Chairman. One of its first tasks has been to initiate a survey to understand the scope of MAS interest in the industry.
This initiative complements the MILC programme to develop MAS technology within the UK and SMI’s Chief Executive is the Chairman of the Steering Group. A large number of SMI members are involved with this programme and Mr James Fanshawe (AutoNaut Ltd) chairs the MAS Regulatory Working Group which has been leading international efforts to create the basis for sensible regulation of autonomous operations on our seas. One of its first outputs was the publication of a MAS (Surface) Code of Conduct which was circulated widely at the International Maritime Organization meeting of MSC96.
This considerable activity by SMI ensures all member companies, of whatever size, can access support for their business development and thereby maintain their technology lead in the global market.
