The Power of Diversification
Ash Sinha, Group Business Development Director of A&P Group, talks to SMI about the importance of diversified capabilities for a modern marine and industrial engineering service provider.
“Modern commercial ship yards are increasingly active across a wide range of sectors, spanning renewables, offshore, commercial marine and defence. It is in these facilities that I see the most innovative responses to changing market conditions are taking place.
“To my mind, the adage ‘don’t put all your eggs in one basket’ is not only one to be heeded, but something that should be embraced. Diversification is strengthening many businesses in the marine sector, helping to reduce risk, insulate against changing market conditions, retain and develop talent and adopt a position of competitive defence.

“For a business like ours diversification has achieved all those things and enabled us to develop a broad cross‐section of in‐house expertise that spans the renewables, offshore oil and gas, commercial marine, defence and civil nuclear new build and decommissioning sectors. While many of the skills needed to service each of these sectors are unique many are also transferrable and so the opportunity to access wide ranging skills and disciplines when needed, is hugely valuable. This gives us the agility, flexibility and point of difference we need to compete.
“As our own experience has shown, the value diversification creates is more than the sum of its parts. Being active in different sectors improves the ability to attract, retain and nurture specialist and technical talent and sustain highly skilled jobs for the industry as a whole. With clear career opportunities to move into new areas or be exposed to different skills, diversity protects the talent pool.
