John Murray Chief Executive
A Word from the Chief Executive UK Maritime Excellence
The Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) is the voice of the UK’s maritime engineering and business sector promoting and support‐ ing companies which design, build, refit and modernise ships, and supply equipment and services for all types of commercial and naval ships, ports and terminals infrastructure, offshore oil and gas, maritime security and safety, marine science and tech‐ nology, maritime autonomous systems and marine renewable energy.
The world‐class capabilities of companies in the SMI’s membership are much sought after throughout the global marketplace as befits such a strong maritime nation as the UK. Our members’ focus on technology and innovation ensures that the latest solutions are available to the sector’s customers to meet the ever more stringent environmental and safety regimes in which modern industry operates.
Our activities play a significant role in maintaining a strong UK mar‐ itime industry and are ably demonstrated by our web portal, which gives our members’ customers access to a comprehensive database of information. The web portal
www.maritimeindustries.org receives thousands of visits each month and provides visitors with

accurate information on the products and services available from the UK. Towards the end of this directory we have included a brief description of the capabilities of each of our members, providing a snapshot for the casual observer of the broad range of industries we represent.
Should your company become a member?
If your company is actively seeking to expand its activities then the answer is a resounding yes! The reasons a company joins the Society of Maritime Industries are many and it would not be an exaggeration to say that each of our 150 member companies probably has its own unique answers with one common outcome – it is good for their business.
A quick read of the preceding pages provides an impressive list of our achievements and activities. The fact that a high proportion of this activity is related to exports is not surprising when one considers that exporting is a major factor in an ambitious company’s strategy for growth. Understandably, it is the application of innovation and technology which provides the platform for this growth in the first place and SMI can provide support and direction for companies seeking either funding or commercial partners in this area.
When joining SMI companies are invited to select from a list of six market areas of interest to their business, namely:
Commercial maritime operations including ship building, repair and marine equipment
Marine science and technology Maritime autonomous systems Naval and maritime defence & security Offshore industries including renewable energy Ports and terminals infrastructure
Each of these business areas is represented by an elected Council which guides the policy and activities of SMI to ensure that the members’ interests are met.
A simple list of events or activities only partially reflects the value of the networking which exists across all six of SMI’s areas of interest. I know many members have identified new business opportunities by participating in an event with a different focus
