“We have seen ever closer collaboration between

government and industry and Maritime UK is providing an increasingly authoritative voice for the sector as a whole.” Lord Ahmad, Transport Minister

Maritime UK Who is Maritime UK?

The 2015 Maritime Growth Study set a clear challenge for industry and government to rigorously examine the UK’s place within an increasingly competitive global maritime market, and to build an ambitious strategy to strengthen and grow the UK’s position. The Study marked a turning point for our industry; a once‐in‐a‐generation opportunity to act and ensure the UK’s competitiveness in the world.

Since its publication Maritime UK has become the industry’s promotional body and is bringing together the UK's shipping, ports, marine and business services sectors, to drive forward an ambitious agenda for growth. Our aim is to promote the UK as a world‐class maritime centre and to unite the maritime community in meeting the challenges of tomorrow.

A United Industry

Over the course of the last year, we have brought together industry experts from across all sectors – including the Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) – to participate in working groups on each of the key themes identified by the study. These include:

Identifying new export and investment opportunities

Building a year‐round programme of activity to raise the profile of the sector at home and abroad

Showcasing the dynamism and energy within our industry, and raising our collective profile in the eyes of policy and decision makers

Examining the key steps required to deliver an effective skills strategy

All members of the UK Marine Industries Alliance (UK MIA) have joined Maritime UK in their own right, and the MIA’s Working Groups have been integrated into Maritime UK. This ensures the greatest possible co‐ordination across the industry, and that Maritime UK is fully focussed on the marine sector as a core component.

Our Working Groups are helping to deliver a properly co‐ordinated response to key issues of mutual interest and the participation of

To help boost exports across the industry, Maritime UK has partnered with Government’s Exporting Is GREAT initiative, and will be working with members to deliver a national programme of events and support for companies ‐ particularly SMEs ‐ with their individual exporting needs. The online Business Opportunities Platform facilitates the sharing of relevant opportunities across the industry. The next step is to work with British officials in embassies and high commissions to input potential new business for the industry from their part of the world.

The Future

The Growth Study set the right course, and as a result, industry is now in a position to work together to create opportunities for growth across the whole industry. Maritime UK is committed ensuring that the UK remains a competitive world‐class maritime centre and looks forward to continuing to work with its members.
