Special Awards
SMI runs two awards each year funded by a trust fund set up in memory of Mr Donald Maxwell, the founder director‐general of SMI’s predecessor organisation, BMEC. In 2016 the AMSI Business Person of the Year Award was presented to Mr Paul Ridout, Executive Chairman of OSIL, who retired from the AMSI Council at the end of 2016 after many years of service. The Student Award went to Kate Devereux who is studying for MEng in Ship Science at the University of Southampton for her topical paper Investigation into the suitability of composite materials for the construction of marine propellers and was presented to her by SMI’s Chairman at the AGM Luncheon.

Acknowledgement of Member Support
SMI relies on the active support of its members in a variety of capacities which ensures we continue to meet the needs of the industry. Through SMI’s Board of Directors and Councils, 107 members are involved with the running of SMI and setting its policy agenda. Following elections we welcomed no less than 14 new members to serve on the Board and the Councils ensuring that a broad cross section of the membership contributes to our work and provides a valuable resource for new ideas.
