and there were also increase in the production of blends for both breeding and finishing sheep. There was a 700 tonne or 4.4 per cent increase in production

of feeds for horses during the month while production of ‘other compounds, blends and concentrates’, at 31,700 tonnes, was ahead of year earlier figures by 4,400 tonnes or 16.1 per cent. The latter category is thought to be dominated by a significant volume of feeds for fish.

Looking at the first two months of the year is unlikely to give a

reliable indication as to how the year will turn out as a whole; however, total production of compounds, blends and concentrates in Great Britain during the two months in question amounted to 1,885,000 tonnes, 85,000 tonnes or 4.7 per cent more than in the same two months of 2016. Every sector was a ‘winner’ in terms of increased year-on-year production with the exception of pigs which, at a total of 279,100 tonnes, was down by 16,600 tonnes or 4.6 per cent less than in the equivalent period of 2016. Data on compound feed production in Great Britain is scheduled to have become available on 4 May, allowing readers to take a peek at the first quarter of 2017. Watch this space.

NORTHERN IRELAND UPDATE Data has recently become available for the production in Northern Ireland of compound feeds, blends and concentrates for the month of February 2017. The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs

(DAERA) has reported production of compounds, blends and concentrates in Northern Ireland during the month in question as 204,300 tonnes, up by 13,600 tonnes or 7.1 per cent compared with the corresponding month twelve months earlier. This is the highest total for the month since reports started to be kept in their present

form in 1996. Production of cattle and calf feeds, at 109,800 tonnes during

February 2017, was 8,400 tonnes or 8.3 per cent more than in the corresponding month a year earlier. Here, compounds was the star performer. Production of compounds for dairy cows, at 43,900 tonnes, were 3,500 tonnes or 8.6 per cent ahead of production in February 2016 while production of compounds for beef cattle, at 16,600 tonnes, were 3,900 tonnes or 8.6 per cent ahead of year earlier levels. In contrast, the increases in output of coarse mixes and blends for both beef and dairy cattle were volumetrically much less, being respectively 400 tonnes and 300 tonnes for beef and dairy cattle. Production of feeds for cattle and calf in February constituted 53.7

per cent of total production of compounds, blends and concentrates in Northern Ireland during February, up from 53.2 per cent in the same month a year earlier. Production of feeds for pigs in Northern Ireland in February 2017

amounted to 17,800 tonnes, 1,600 tonnes or 9.7 per cent more than in the same month a year previously and the highest for almost twenty years. There were increases right across the sector with the single exception of feeds for breeding pigs which at 2,700 tonnes, were down by around a hundred tonnes or 2.8 per cent. This may signal the start of a downturn. However, in percentage terms, production of feeds for very young animals, including starter and creep feeds as well as link and early grower feeds, were higher compared to the same month a year earlier. Production of feeds for poultry in Northern Ireland has been

increasing significantly in recent years. In February 2017, poultry feed production amounted to 60,900 tonnes, an increase of 4,200 tonnes or 7.5 per cent over the corresponding month a year earlier and representing a marginal increase in poultry feed’s share of total
