Young people facing disadvantage to be mentored by World Class athlete
Young adults in Blaenau Gwent are being encouraged to sign up for a motivational programme that uses
world-class
athletes to help people lead positive lives. The unique 14-month programme Get on Track
– delivered by national charity Dame Kelly Holmes Trust – is kicked off in Blaenau Gwent on March 28 following its success across other parts of the UK at providing young people facing disadvantage with the
attitudes and capabilities to make positive life choices. Local

enhance the lives of young people in and around the town is supporting the Get on Track programme, run by the Trust, throughout March, April and May. The programme will be led by former Welsh 15’s Rugby International and Dame Kelly Holmes Trust athlete mentor, Philippa Tuttiett. With the help of an athlete mentor, local young people will learn to develop the high performing
attitudes of
confi dence, resilience, determination, focus and motivation from the course. Get on Track is designed to inspire confi dence and trust, build team skills, personal awareness and engage young people in a series of high energy sessions. Funding for Get on Track Blaenau Gwent was also made possible thanks to funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery.
For those of you who haven’t yet had the pleasure of visiting The Oaks Garden Nursery it is run by local charity Vision 21 (Cyfl e Cymru), who provide realistic work based opportunities and work experience for people with learning diffi culties. The Oaks is a social enterprise where profi ts made at the nursery are put back into developing the project. Located on Allensbank Road, The Oaks sells a large selection of plants,
hanging baskets, vegetables and herbs to the public, whilst giving the opportunity for trainees that attend to learn many skills from growing seeds, potting on, to social interaction and retail experience. The Oaks Garden Nursery had a refurbishment last year, as well as a new green house and wildlife garden. Why not take a visit to the nursery to see the brilliant achievements of the trainees for yourself and pick up a plant or two!
