Classic bike avoids the chop and raises cash for BBC Children In Need

A stunning, special edition bike has been saved from the scrapheap and auctioned off to raise almost £400 for Children In Need and demonstrate the power of reuse culture.

The Mark 3 Raleigh Chopper – a special

“England 2006” limited edition model - was donated by a member of the public at a household waste recycling centre which is run by FCC Environment, one of the UK’s leading waste and resource management companies. Eagle-eyed employees spotted the hidden

gem and sent it to be repaired and reconditioned at HMP Rochester, as part of an award-winning deal between FCC Environment and the prison which sees offenders learn new skills. And the Chopper was so special bosses

decided it was the perfect item to demonstrate the power of the reuse revolution, taking it to the national Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) Conference in Nottingham and auctioning it off to raise money for the BBC’s annual Children In Need appeal. The bike sold for an

incredible £370 with winning bidder Chris Jones, who works for Staffordshire County Council, seeing off a peleton full of rivals to secure the steed. He was presented with the

bike at a special event in November on Children In Need day 2015. Chris said he was delighted

to win the auction, which he felt was the perfect way of showing his support for Staffordshire County Council’s new “Adopt an Appliance”

campaign which hopes to increase recycling rates by encouraging people to donate their old unused, unwanted and broken electrical goods to their local Household Waste Recycling Centre. Chris said, “I’m absolutely delighted to have

won the auction and support both Children In Need and the Adopt an Appliance campaign. “I know the team put a lot of hard work in to

finding items to reuse so for them to find a gem like this is something really special.” Steve Bell, Reuse Development Manager

from FCC Environment, added, “We find some incredible bargains that people bring in and throw away. “The Chopper looked in good condition

anyway given its age, but we knew that with a bit of tender loving care we could really make something of it and provide someone with something they could reuse.

“The fact it has raised money for such a

fantastic cause like Children In Need makes it extra special.” The work to save the chopper from the

chop is the perfect example of Staffordshire’s new “Adopt an Appliance” campaign. Items brought to any of the county’s 14

HWRCs that can be reused will be sent to the Katharine House Hospice Re-use Shop at the Cannock HWRC where the items are tested and then sold on to the public. Stereos, televisions, DVD players, electric

fires and kitchen equipment are amongst the items which will be available in the Re-use Shop. Any items brought in that are not suitable

for reuse or beyond repair will still be recycled. Other recycling initiatives are available at

each facility, including materials such as carpet, mattresses and hard plastic recycling.
