VWS Chief awarded CIWM Industry Leader of the Year 2015
Julian Glasspole, Managing Director of Vehicle Weighing Solutions Ltd (VWS) and Chairman of the AW family of companies, has been awarded the prestigious title of Industry Leader of the Year 2015 by the Chartered Institute of Waste Management (CIWM). Julian, who was chosen for his business flair,
strong worth ethic and commitment to the industry said, “It was a huge honour to be shortlisted alongside such high calibre contenders and I’m over the moon to have been selected as the winner. “2015 has been an amazing year and this
award is really down to the hard work and dedication of the whole team at Vehicle Weighing Solutions and Applied Weighing.”
The winners of the 9th annual CIWM Sustainability and Resource Awards were announced at a ceremony hosted by Nick Hewer, presenter of Countdown and Alan Sugar’s right-hand man on The Apprentice, at the London Marriott Grosvenor Square on Friday 6 November. Those shortlisted for the Industry Leader of
the Year award included Liz Goodwin OBE, Ray Georgeson MBE and Dr Stephen Jenkinson. In its Awards Prospectus the CIWM said of

package to be designed specifically for waste and recycling operators, and has been created to simplify and streamlines processes from Sales through to Operations including route scheduling, administration, billing and reporting.
Lichfield and Tamworth Joint Waste Service Announces New Fleet Partner
Following a competitive tendering process Lichfield District Council and Tamworth Borough Council’s Joint Waste Service has selected Specialist Fleet Services Ltd (SFS) as its chosen vehicle provider for the shared waste and recycling service to homes across Lichfield, Burntwood, Tamworth and surrounding areas. Cllr Iain Eadle, Cabinet Member for Waste Management at Lichfield District Council commented: “SFS offered the best value in terms of quality and price. We are delighted to be working with a new partner and we hope to further improve our efficiency and service to the public.” The six-year contract hire agreement will
start in February 2016, with an option to extend for an additional six years and involves the
(RCV), three DAF/NTM and one Mitsubishi/Faun 7.5 RCV. The Authority is hoping for better fuel efficiency and is using a shorter wheel based vehicle for easier access to new housing estates. SFS will also be carrying out maintenance on the Councils’ vehicles via its existing site workshops. Northampton-based SFS has over 20 years
experience in delivering successful contract hire, fleet and workshop management solutions to the public and private sector. Bob Sweetland, Managing Director, SFS
provision of 22 vehicles for the councils’ shared Joint Waste Service’s refuse, recycling and street cleansing fleet. The new vehicles will comprise 18 x 26- tonne Mercedes/Faun Refuse Collection Vehicles
First Volvo Trucks for ten years join Frank O’Gara & Sons fleet
Two Volvo FMX-410 8x4s have entered service with Frank O’Gara & Sons, one of North-West England and Manchester’s best known tipper operators. The trucks were supplied by Thomas Hardie Commercials at Trafford Park. The N3G class, off-road specification FMXs,
which feature X-High chassis, B-Ride High drive-axle suspension and straight front axles for optimum ground clearance, are the first Volvos to join the Frank O’Gara & Sons fleet for ten years. The main activities of the Manchester- based family-owned haulage company, are Demolition, Excavation and Remediation services to the construction industry. The new Volvo FMX eight-wheelers, which
join a 30-strong fleet of tipper trucks, are engaged on removal of material from, or supply

of materials to, Demolition, Remediation and Construction sites in North-West England. The trucks also supply material to the company’s recycling facility. Frank O’Gara & Sons Managing Director John
O’Gara cites the excellent residual values of Volvo construction trucks like the high spec FMXs now in use by his company as one of the main reasons for their purchase, “Our strategy, going forward, is to renew the fleet every five years. Volvo’s residuals have always been very good and the latest FMX tippers were highly recommended by other operators in the industry. Hardie, we think it’s a good package for our type of work, which requires a tough and reliable truck.” In addition to the D11K410 11-litre engine rated
at 410hp, the specification of the 5100mm wheelbase FMXs also includes I-Shift automated transmission, Volvo Engine Brake (VEB), Drive Package interior and reversing camera. The double skinned bodywork is by Boweld. Signwriting is by Martin Walker Signs.
