Keeping on track with Continuing Competence

Are you one of the waste managers who achieved their continuing competence certificate between 1st March 2012 and 28th February 2014? If you’ve not already done so you need to make plans to renew your certificate by 29th February 2016.

At the beginning of December 2015, there are just 90 days before the end of the renewal period; the good news is 2016 is a leap year so you have an extra day to schedule your continuing competence test; the bad news is that this also includes the Christmas and New Year holidays. As the deadline looms closer it can become increasingly difficult to book a test at your preferred centre and on the date/time that suits you best.

Rolling programme In March 2014 a rolling programme was introduced to even out the peak of waste managers required to take a test by the end of February. Successful candidates now receive a continuing competence certificate ‘date stamped’ with an expiry date for two years from the date of achievement, which makes it easier for individuals and organisations to track when their next test is due. The first cohort of candidates received these new style certificates from 1st March 2014 onwards and will now be approaching their two year anniversary, so it is timely to remind people to check the expiry date on their certificates, which is shown in the shaded green circle.

Booking the test The current cost of the continuing competence test is £120; follow the instructions and links from the WAMITAB website wamitab.org.uk/pg/continuing- competence. The test is delivered at centres located in major towns across the country (same venue as the driving theory test). The last day for tests before Christmas is Wednesday 23rd December 2015 as centres will be closed from 24th December and reopen on 29th December. Candidates are

advised to check New Year closure with the centres when making their booking. Everyone takes the Generic Knowledge

Test, which covers Legislation, Health and Safety and Environmental Protection. In addition, you can take up to three Activity Specific Tests (AST), selected according to the areas of competence required for your site. It is not necessary to identify which ASTs you want when you book the test but you will need to know which options you require on the day of the test.

Be prepared The next stage of the planning is to make

the topics likely to appear; plus activities to check knowledge and understanding and space for notes. It is important that all designated

technically competent managers should be able to demonstrate their competence: to operate the equipment; to comply with legislation and government policies; and to minimise risk and the impact on people and the environment. Keeping the test

current and relevant Every two years we review the syllabus and test questions and work is underway as this article goes to press. This process is designed to ensure that the test reflects current legislation and guidance. The new test and question bank will go live

from April 2016 and all the revision summaries and guides will also be updated to allow sufficient time for candidates to prepare for the new syllabus. Information about the new syllabus and

sure you are “test-ready” by doing some revision so that you are armed with the relevant knowledge and understanding for success. The WAMITAB website provides materials to support individuals preparing to take their Continuing Competence test. There are free downloadable summary documents and also more detailed paid-for revision guides, which provide useful information and links to key legislation and guidance. Separate Revision Guides have been developed for each Generic Knowledge Test and for the ASTs, covering

the exact date it will become effective will be available via the WAMITAB website by the end February 2016. If you are due to take your test from April onwards then it is a good idea to set a reminder in your diary to visit the website in the New Year to see the new syllabus and plan your revision accordingly.
