New Boats Table

in association with the Spinlock Special Projects Team Every detail

Team France engaged spar and (giant) multihull engineers HDS to improve their 470 centreboards ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic Regatta

Team France first invited us to become involved with the team’s 470 foil designs back in 2010. A method for accurately measuring bending and torsional stiffness of small foils had already been devel- oped by ENVSN (the French National Sailing School) at St Pierre Quiberon, and HDS/GSEA then developed specific FEA modelling methods to allow the sailors to accurately classify their boards according to actual and desired performance as functions of wind and sea state and in a few cases of sailing venue. In 2016 a new 470 centreboard was requested; we were asked to update the results of the initial study, particularly with respect to the foil’s operating ‘environment’. The object was to accurately relate tangible measures like stiffness profile (in all axes) to the sailors’ feel for the board’s performance across a wide range of conditions and/or transition phases (for example, when tacking). To conduct a good-quality study it was also necessary for us to carefully model the stiffness of the centreboard support structures (plate case, ribs etc) to get a full picture of the board dynamics under live load. Here there are many different cases to account for, such as static equilibrium, when sailing upwind in smooth water, and dynamic effects, for example pumping the rig to accelerate off the startline or sailing upwind through waves.

The final step involved integrating the modelled effects of the fluid/structure interactions around the centreboard and their effect on the overall sailing balance of the boat. To complete this part of the study we carefully modelled the flow behaviour of the centreboard using each of our different cases.

Boards and all… a strong finish saw French 470 girls Camille Lecointre and Hélène Defrance flying home with a bronze madal

Lastly, we validated all of the final

combined results using measurements recorded in a long series of carefully managed trials on the water. Using these methods a completely new 470 centreboard was designed for Rio 2016, tailored specifically for the expected conditions at the venue. Several prototypes were then tested before the fully optimised design was manufactured by Heol Composites. Rémy Balze, HDS-GSEA Design q

The prototype is building in southern California with production starting in November Light new DSS design with canting keel and single, central daggerboard

Already a champion – series build IRC winner with an interior to die for – 10 boats sold Follow-ups to the latest ‘Oystercatcher XXXXX…’ are available to order (tidy IRC machine, btw) Why the hurry?

March 2016 onward The female moulds are polished for a sistership to light/medium air flyer Longbow Dec 2016 2017

Brand new 5th-generation high RM production Class40 from the boys. Two boats already sold Will this be the first ever custom ORC racer… very interesting, Mr Bond This custom IRC racer will be there for the start of the 2016 Middle Sea Race A larger development from the Gunboat G4 but now (back) in DNA’s own name All of the teams now have their America’s Cup challengers underway… (and if not!) The new Interlodge Vwill debut at Key West 2017. All the best bits come together… A cruiser-racer plus a racer-racer, both good looking and both built by Vismara Good-looking new cruiser-racer design from the California style kings Fast cruising cat eminently eligible for those newly emerging big cat regattas… A little late but the new Robertissima will (definitely!) be on the dock at the Maxi Worlds Designer Brett Bakewell-White is busy, but sadly submerged under a pile of NDAs

An unprecedented effort has gone into both the look and the weight concentration of the latest WallyCento. The shell and primary structure are almost complete and she looks like a very fine (and very fast) yacht indeed

And another new solo trimaran for 2016 Vendée Globe favourite Armel Le Cléac’h Séb Josse’s new solo multihull will begin life just outside the Ultim Class length limit Latest Wally features novel interior styling with WallyCento-style performance Very little from the Reichel/Pugh office ever goes slowly… or looks old Original 1936 Frank Paine design Original 1937 Thore Holm design

This Thore Holm design has been 75 years in gestation… finally she is underway Big, comfy, but will be very fast for a boat of this type. Superyacht trophies beckon
