Bienvenue
Yes, yes, we do know that he’s Argentinian... Sebastian Carlini is a relatively new name on the international design stage but he served his time – 18 years – work- ing alongside Germán Frers in Buenos Aires. With an immaculately researched 32ft regatta winner now under his belt, Carlini deserves a much wider hearing
What became the Trentadue production project was born out of a request from an existing client for a one-off 10m design
34 SEAHORSE
with which he could win the most impor- tant offshore championship in South America, the Circuito Atlántico Sur Rolex Cup, run under both IRC and ORC and held at the seaside resort of Punta del Este in Uruguay. The client also asked for reasonable cruising accommodation for family sailing so, to be successful, the new boat would need to achieve that elusive and delicate balance between great perfor- mance and a reasonable level of comfort. Having received the original commis- sion a couple of years ago, the challenge of designing an ‘IRC winner’ was accepted. Soon after starting design work we also agreed with the client that Piermarine Yachts would build the new vessel. However, a few short months later and word of our project had clearly slipped out… in a period of a few weeks Pierma- rine had taken deposits for a further nine examples of the design. And all that we had done by then was to make some plans and early renders available to the sailing public! Because of this unexpected early commercial success, we made the obvious
decision to build robust female tooling that could then be reused as required. To fulfil the expectations for this project Piermarine Yachts immediately also added to their own resources, purchasing a new larger CNC router to machine all of the boat’s component plugs, including for the hull and deck, plus a more modern water- jet cutter. The company also expanded its manufacturing installation from 3,000 to 3,600m2
and brought in from Europe a specialist in the resin infusion processes that would be used for the new boats. As a consequence the Trentadue 32 has entirely
been designed and built in
Argentina, and to the highest international standards. It has also become the first IRC production boat ever to be developed from scratch in that country.

Our first task was to enter some preliminary characteristics for a concept boat into our own large database contain- ing all the available information about the best recent IRC boats from 25 to 50ft,
