Wanda steals

headstart on Disney New park debuts in Nanchang

O

n Saturday, May 28 – just two weeks ahead of the official opening of Shanghai Disney Resort – the Dalian Wanda Group unveiled its latest large theme park project, this time in the Jiangxi province of southern China. Designed and masterplanned by FORREC, the 78-hectare Nanchang Wanda Park

is part of the wider RMB21 billion yuan (US$3.2 bn) Wanda Cultural Tourism City and was built on the site of the former Treasure Gourd Farm (sic). Featured at the park are 32 rides and attractions including what is now the tallest, fastest and longest wooden rollercoaster in China. In designing the new look park, FORREC was inspired the rich history and culture of

this southern China province, including Poyang Lake – the largest freshwater lake in China – as well as majestic mountains and other beautiful natural features. “Storytelling is a central aspect of this region and the culture is rich with material to

draw from,” explains Linda Hung, FORREC's senior director for theme parks. “We used some of Jiangxi’s favourite stories to create immersive experiences that celebrate the porcelain industry, ancient poetry, famous architecture, fairy folklore, life on the water and natural splendour.” The Canadian company's work on the new park follows its earlier efforts at

Wanda Xishuangbanna International Resort in the region by the same name and also the indoor Wanda Movie Park in Wuhan, capital city of the Hubei Province. The five zones within the new Nanchang Wanda Park are as follows: Bamboo Forest. Here guests can walk through lush bamboo groves punctuated

by contemporary architecture. A treehouse at the top of undulating hills contributes to the ambience. whilst the signature Viper wooden rollercoaster by Great Coasters International sets new records in China for size and speed. The rustic-looking Fisherman’s Village harks back to an earlier time when Poyang

Lake was a source of livelihood for local residents. Temple of Clouds follows in the footsteps of Wang Bo, one of the four great poets of the Tang Dynasty, and features the style of architecture that inspired the poet as he wrote and read his verse. Featured as part of this land is the Intamin ride Coaster Through The Clouds. Pottery Village pays homage to the region's status as China’s capital of

porcelain. As well as enjoying theatre shows and taking pottery classes with local artisans, visitors can enjoy a wild mouse style rollercoaster ride through a simulated pottery kiln on the attraction Spinning Potteries. Finally, Fairy Lady Land is based on a romantic story of two young people – one

a fairy and the other a young cowherd -- who are prevented from being together until a bridge that legend says birds build once a year allows them to move to an ethereal place where they can be together. Additional rollercoasters featured at the park include the SBL inverted coaster Soaring Dragon & Dancing Phoenix and Giant Caterpillar. Intamin also supplied an 80m-tall Gyro Drop and a Flying Island observation platform, which rises to a maximum height of 52.5m. Spanning 2 square kilometres (200 hectares), Wanda Cultural Tourism City is

Intamin has supplied the new park with three coasters

destined to include a movie park, aquarium, hotels, retail and real estate and expected to attract up to 10 million guests a year, according to to Bloomberg. Wanda is reported to be planning a further 14 Wanda City projects across China

by 2020. As such, the company's billionaire chairman Wang Jianlin, often referred to as China's richest man, is bullish about the group's prospects compared to Disney, whose new park in Shanghai is set for an official opening on June 16. “One tiger is no match for a pack of wolves,” he told China Central Television (CCTV) last month.
