Thea Awards one month

left to submit nominations Attendance topped 1,000 recently for themed entertainment's biggest weekend of the year, the annual Thea Awards Gala and TEA Summit from the Themed Entertainment Association at Disneyland Resort in Los Angeles. Some 400 delegates attended the two-day summit (March 31/April 1), followed by a full house of 700 for the black tie gala on April 2.

"The Theas shine a bright light on the industry and its leaders, fabricators and

creative geniuses who make themed entertainment magic," says TEA founder Monty Lunde. "As the industry continues to expand into broader experience oriented markets, the Thea Awards have likewise grown.” Each year between 100 to 200 nominations are received and considered by the TEA Thea Awards committee in categroies including outstanding attractions, breakthrough technology, event spectaculars, cultural attractions and guest experiences, as well as individuals who have made their mark through a lifetime of distinguished achievements. Nominations for the 2016 Thea Awards are open until July 8. For consideration,

projects must have opened or the event taken place between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2016. Anyone may submit a nomination for a project, event, person or technology. Membership of the TEA is not a requirement, and you can even nominate your own project. Winners will be announced in November and then formally presented with their awards in spring 2017 at the 23rd annual Thea Awards Gala. Lake of Illusions ECA2 lights up Happy Valley Shanghai

As all eyes focus on the opening this month of Shanghai Disney Resort, the city's established Happy Valley theme park is preparing to wow the the pubic with a new multimedia spectacular courtesy of the renowned French producer ECA2. Lake of Illusions is based around a 32m-high landmark structure that transforms into a dazzling show after dark, combining architecture, light, sound, video, water and other effects. “To match the grand scale of its context in Happy Valley, Lake of Illusions was

conceived to stand out in every dimension,” says the show’s producer, Jean-Christophe Canizares, also chairman and CEO of ECA2. “It’s a true icon that dominates its setting and intrigues the park’s visitors.” Rising from the tranquil stillness of Happy Valley Shanghai's central lake, the

structure leans skyward at a dramatic angle. At night, spectators will be memorised as the tower seemingly grows wings, with water screens and video effects weaving their magic. Controlled by cutting-edge technology, the effects reaching higher, wider and deeper as the 18-minute show progresses and a dream-like story unfolds. Even the apparently grounded tower becomes weightless and dances to an uplifting soundtrack. It’s a poetic tale inspired by China’s storytelling traditions, playfully reworked to enthral new generations of audiences. ECA2 spent a full year in research and development to create a unique new effect called Spiro screen, which uses rotating water jets in combination with video, light and laser images. Pixel mapping machines installed in the tower help create a sense of movement, along with moving water jets, moving lights, mist, flames, lasers, and video projection. Eleven sources of sound strategically placed around the 88 x 145m site to complete the immersive experience. Lake of Illusions will perform each night to crowds of up to 1,000, and will

celebrate its official launch on July 10. More soon in Park World. Happy Valley Shanghai is operated by the OCT group. ECA2's other multimedia spectaculars in Asia in recent years include the Big-O Show in Yeosu, South Korea, Wings of Time in Singapore and Fountain of Dreams in Wuyishan, part of China's Fujian province. The latter two are Thea Award-winning projects. Could Lake of Illusions achieve the same recognition?
