GETTING TO KNOW:
Getting to know: Susan O’Leary
Susan O’Leary, Director of eCommerce for Alderney eGambing, is a lawyer who has represented some of the world’s leading eGambling operators and gambling service providers, including many of Alderney’s licensees. Let’s get to know her…
Casino International Online [CIO]: Tell us a bit about your background… Susan O’Leary [SOL]: I practised as a commercial lawyer by trade before starting with Alderney. The Alderney regime and licensees were very familiar to me as I headed up the gambling team at my old firm, Collas Crill in both their Guernsey and London offices. I worked frequently with and knew the teams at the AGCC and of course my predecessor, Robin Le Prevost. I had worked with a lot of the Alderney licensees over the years as well as other gambling lawyers and service providers internationally. It is a small sector and everyone knows everyone so it was not a huge change even though I was not practising law anymore.
CIO: How did you come to join Alderney eGambling?
SOL: The idea had been thrown around for a
while to join them in some capacity but I was not yet ready to give up the law and private practice. The timing worked out well as I had built up great experience from working for the operators and licensees as their lawyer so understood their perspective from another side. This experience has proven to be invaluable for helping to solve issues for licensees and for the
understanding of the nuances of legislation and
regulatory changes happening globally. My approach is quite practical so it breaks down the

barriers for operators and licensees in a regulatory environment. The trust had already been built up for those that I had acted for or knew me.
CIO: Where was your immediate focus when you started?
SOL: My main focus was to change the perception of Alderney. Alderney and the AGCC have always had a fantastic reputation as being a top tier regulator. However, there is a fine line between being known as the best regulator and being known as the strictest. From my days on the other side of the fence
