PIPES AND DUCTWORK PIPES AND DUCTWORK Lack of maintenance

Following on from dirt and blockage problems, a lack of maintenance is often cited as the root cause.

Filtration may help to eliminate a sizeable proportion of contaminants but maintenance and inspection, as recommended by the ductwork manufacturer, should never be overlooked. Building owners and operators should also be aware that poorly maintained ventilation systems pose a greater fi re risk, particularly in kitchens or other commercial applications where grease extract systems are in place.

Careful placement of access doors will ensure that maintenance is as hassle-free as possible. The DW144 standard is very specifi c about where access doors should be provided and selecting a quality manufacturer is essential to ensure correct performance and minimise air leakage. It may even be necessary to carry out immediate post-installation cleaning as many construction sites are inherently dusty environments. The bagging of ductwork prior to installation and both in transit to site and whilst on site can prevent dust ingress, minimising post installation cleaning requirements. Ductwork cleaning is classed as a specialist

contractor activity so it shouldn’t be left for the installer to carry out.

Sub-standard ductwork Specifi cation of sub-standard ductwork or ductwork that is simply not fi t for purpose is still an ongoing issue and although much has been done in terms of guidance there will always be unscrupulous organisations or individuals looking to make a quick profi t.

DW144 has long been recognised as the standard specifi cation for ductwork manufacture and installation and has been revised a number of times since the standard was fi rst published back in 1998.

The standard promotes best practice and contains important information on hangers and supports, smoke and fi re dampers, external ductwork, internal duct linings, thermal insulation and air terminal units. It defi nes specifi cations for sheet metal ductwork for low, medium and high pressure/ velocity air systems and covers ductwork application, materials, classifi cation and air leakage. It also highlights the technical information to be provided by system designers to ductwork contractors and looks in detail at

rectangular, circular, and fl at oval ductwork. Testing is another consideration which can

aff ect system performance. Not all systems are tested during the installation or on completion and a less than reputable contractor may take the risk and cut corners on the installation on the basis that the system may not be tested and the use of inferior products or a poor installation may not be discovered. DW144 clearly identifi es the need to use tested and approved materials, including cross joints and gaskets. It’s construction methods are designed to ensure consistent manufacturing with the best possible results but care must be taken to ensure that the installation is undertaken to those standards.

Anyone involved in the industry should be familiar with DW144 as well as BS EN 15780 (Ventilation for Buildings – Ductwork – Cleanliness of Ventilation Systems) and follow the comprehensive guidelines on design, installation and cleaning. There is really no excuse for poorly designed, installed or maintained ductwork and those who choose to ignore best practice risk compromising the effi ciency of the ventilation system and damaging reputations across the board.
