HFOs under the spotlight with the IOR T
he First International Conference on the Application of HFO Refrigerants from the Institute of Refrigeration (IOR) presents an
ideal opportunity to learn about the experiences of the users of refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump systems with these new refrigerants. Up until now conferences, seminars, technical papers and magazine articles have been provided by the refrigerant manufacturers, who have been working hard for the last ten years to develop, test and commercialise these products. This has provided a strong foundation of technical information, but what has been lacking to date is the chance to hear the outcome of these efforts as seen by the people who have most at stake – the owners and operators of businesses whose survival depends on having reliable, efficient refrigeration systems. Anyone who runs a business which is currently
dependent on HFC refrigerants such as R404A and R407F and doesn’t know where they are going next needs to be at this event. Operations directors tasked with managing the transition from the last generation of refrigeration systems to the next also need to hear what’s being said here. Risk managers and safety officers who will be left with a different compliance
challenge will benefit from the focus on safety issues including risk assessment and mitigation. There are about ten years left to achieve the most significant disruption in refrigeration technology – the Kigali amendment to the Montreal Protocol. This will affect everyone who runs a refrigeration system, so this first international conference opportunity must not be missed.
Six internationally respected keynote speakers have
been invited by the IOR to present plenary lectures on the challenges of using flammable refrigerants, the experiences of end users, risk analysis and safety assessment, the policy context of F-Gas phase down, refrigerant selection guidance and the development of equipment for HFOs. The training opportunities afforded by the course
options include tips on the use of refrigerant properties simulation tools, lessons learned in retrofitting, safety and risk assessment, and training in leakage reduction. The tours will include a visit to Spirax Sarco’s Steam and Thermal Energy Laboratory and a trip to Jaguar Land Rover’s new training facility. The conference will feature a set of 70 presentations selected from over 150 submissions from around the world. They will be backed up by peer-reviewed
written papers which meet the IOR’s standards of non- commerciality and content. The programme will be augmented by a series of education courses which the IOR will offer CPD Certification against. In addition, research and development staff and
students from universities and industry will find a strong technical thread running through the conference which may help them with their existing research needs or inspire them to consider new approaches to technical issues being addressed and make useful contacts in the research world. These types of applied research events are essential for our industry to meet the challenges of HFC phase down and acr sustainability. There are several networking opportunities including
the conference dinner, an informal reception and a student networking event to enable young researchers to present themselves to industry leaders.
