The impact on refrigeration
4
The Ecodesign Directive is the legislative framework that sets requirements on all energy-related products in the domestic, commercial and industrial sectors throughout Europe. The directive aims to reduce the negative environmental impact of energy-related products to a minimum during their entire lifetime. Paul Szyszczak, sales director at Danfoss, explains.
E
codesign is also known as the Energy-related Products (ErP) Directive, because all energy- related products with potential for energy savings fall within the scope of the directive. The directive establishes a framework under which manufacturers or energy- using products are obliged to reduce the energy consumption and other negative environmental impacts occurring throughout the product lifetime. Besides manufacturers, installers and wholesalers are also impacted, because they must make the right choice in terms of products and technology for compliant and sustainable installations.
The measures of Ecodesign Requirements for Minimum Effi ciency Performance Standard (MEPS) are set in Europe as a consequence of the implementation of the Ecodesign Directive for Energy-related Products (ErP). The regulation is introduced step-by-
step with requirements gradually intensifying over time, and from 01 July 2018 the MEPS will become more stringent. The Coeffi cient of Performance (COP) is a measurement often applied in refrigeration. In short, higher COPs equate to lower operating costs. For complete systems, COP calculations should include energy consumption of all power consuming auxiliaries. COP is highly dependent on operating conditions, and is often graphed or averaged against expected conditions. The Seasonal Effi ciency Performance Ratio (SEPR) is a seasonal COP, and a value to measure energy performance of refrigeration equipment. It is less reliant on ideal laboratory conditions than is the case for COP, and therefore gives a more realistic estimation of the energy effi ciency, and thereby the environmental impact, of a system. Ecodesign is focused on seasonal energy effi ciency, and as such it is
not suffi cient to have the best COP at ideal operating conditions.
Advantages
The Ecodesign Directive is aimed at eliminating the least performing products from the market and signifi cantly contributing to the EU’s 2020 energy effi ciency objective. It also supports industrial competitiveness and innovation by promoting better environmental performance of products. This not only off ers massive
benefi ts to the environment and the world we live in; it also benefi ts your business.
Ecodesign compliance will ultimately lead to improved functionality and quality of products, which in turn will enable you to off er better system solutions for your customers. Since the limits set for energy consumption are lower, you will also be able to guarantee savings for your customers on their energy bills.
