reminder of the consequences of ignoring the F-Gas Regulations has


been issued by the Government. From 01 April, those who breach the F-Gas Regulations in England and Scotland can face fines of up to £200,000. The onus is on the refrigeration and air conditioning industry to rise to the challenge laid down by the F-Gas Regulations which aim to reduce our reliance on the gases that harm our planet. Preventing refrigeration leaks


and disposing of unwanted gases safely and responsibly has never been more important. Quota levels for the production of virgin high GWP HFC refrigerants have been slashed by 37% this year, and, as a result, prices for go-to gases like R404A rose and then levelled out. To fill the void created by the cut in production the industry has had no option but to change, and it can be congratulated on its achievements. The drive towards low GWP or natural refrigerants is now well under way as contractors and end users look to meet the demands of the law.


A key part of this is making sure that no refrigerant goes to waste. At A-Gas, we have invested heavily in reclamation equipment


to ensure reclaimed refrigerant remains a stable source of supply for many years to come. From the installer’s and the end user’s point of view, it is worth understanding the importance of recovery and getting it right first time. Planning is a key element of


this, and access – and manual handling – need to be priorities. If you are working on top of a six-storey building you know the job is likely to be challenging – especially if five flights of stairs are involved. Another important consideration is how to deal with the refrigerant once you have removed it. Have you enough cylinders to handle it? Are they big enough? How will you move it? Whatever the job, even a 50- kilo recovery, time will be hanging over the contractor like a heavy sword. The quicker the recovery system, the more likely the job will be completed when it should be. That is where the latest generation of portable refrigerant recovery machines can make a significant difference.


A-Gas Rapid Recovery, a


nationwide service, provides highly efficient refrigerant recovery to hard-pushed contractors. The speed of the system has surprised


many people – up to 10 times faster than the alternatives on the market – and this allows installers to get on with other tasks. We also have the expertise


and the equipment to handle the recovered refrigerant. We aim to clean it up and return it to the same quality as virgin product. Returning as much refrigerant to the market as possible eases the pressure on the industry as it looks to meet the shortfall prompted by the cut in virgin production. Recycled product is refrigerant that has been recovered on site and been through a basic cleaning process. It can be re-used by the original owner on the same site or on other sites within the estate. Reclaimed product is different. It has been reprocessed and returned to an approved standard by a licensed reprocessing facility and can be sold and re-used anywhere. The law is clear on how you recover gases and what you can keep and use. It states that as a contractor or


end user, you cannot sell recycled refrigerant on to a third party for use directly. It must be used on the same site or on other sites for which you are responsible, or returned to an approved
