IOR unveils priorities to deliver net zero cooling and heating
T
he Institute of Refrigeration (IOR) has published a statement to deliver net zero cooling and heating. With the UK
Government drawing up plans for a low carbon response to help the economy emerge from the lock down, cooling and heating will have a key role to play domestically, commercially and industrially. In Beyond Refrigeration, the IOR has
identified seven key areas to be addressed at a policy and practical level to achieve the changes: system performance best technology balancing heating and cooling reducing the need for cooling intelligent energy working together people and skills.
IOR President, Kevin Glass said: “These key areas are designed to focus our thinking, our discussions and our activity. We want to engage with our members who have the expertise to make these changes happen, with other technical experts who will support decision making and with policy makers who can put in place legislative frameworks and mechanisms to create lasting and effective change.”
Cooling through refrigeration, air
conditioning and heat pump processes is essential to support the UK society and economy. Demand for cooling is growing rapidly. This raises some critical issues for our sector such as:
how will UK and global policy makers balance the growing demand for cooling with the need to reduce carbon emissions?
where should we adapt technologies and processes to become a net zero industry?
what should the sector be doing to address these challenges?
Miriam Rodway, chief executive of the IOR explains the approach the IOR is taking: “In some of the seven key areas we have identified, solutions are readily available awaiting adoption, in others they are still very much under development or in early stages of trialling and testing. To make significant change happen we need to gain input from other sectors and to achieve a political will. The IOR wants to engage in a focused discussion in these areas to begin this process so that together, we can meet the cooling needs of our societies, using the least resources and with the least impact on the environment.”
Cooling sustains life, says EPEE on WRD
E
PEE, the European Partnership for Energy and the Environment, published its #CountOnCooling video about the cold chain and how cooling sustains life on World
Refrigeration Day (WRD). The World Refrigeration Day raises awareness and understanding about the significant role that the refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat-pump industry and its technologies play in modern life. This year, it is particularly dedicated to the cold chain (#ColdChain4Life). The cold chain links producers and growers across the world to the domestic refrigerator in our kitchens, and it is essential for so much more than food. For example, vaccines must remain chilled until they are used by medical professionals, and it is essential for blood transfusions, organ donor transport and storage. Andrea Voigt, EPEE director general, said: “Cooling is the
backbone of our society: As more and more Europeans live in cities, we count on cooling to ensure healthy, productive and comfortable living and working environments, fresh and safe food and best in class healthcare. Our sector is essential for our health, for our productivity, for our wellbeing. And it does not stop there. Cooling can play a major role to support the decarbonisation of our economy.” The cooling industry takes its responsibility seriously and
is continuously innovating to provide long-term solutions to maximise the benefits of cooling for society in a safe, affordable, and environmentally sustainable manner. The organisers of the WRD’s ColdChain4Life campaign are the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), ASHRAE, European Partnership for Energy and Environment (EPEE), International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR), the Global Food Cold Chain Council (GFCCC) and the WRD Secretariat.
Star supports career celebration for INWED S
tar Refrigeration supported International Women in Engineering Day for the fourth time by sponsoring a celebration of women
working in the UK refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump sector. The Institute of Refrigeration (IOR) marked the
annual event by holding a Career Development Day to celebrate and promote the role of women in the industry. The IOR hosted a live online event for
anyone currently involved or interested in the refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump (RACHP) sector. The hour-long webinar featured members of the Women in RACHP Network sharing their career experiences in a panel discussion, as well as an interactive Q&A session. Star Refrigeration’s Group HR manager, Nadia Rae said: “We are continuing to drive change in the RACHP sector by actively seeking to bring
more women into our engineering business in different roles. It is a challenge to attract more women to a career in an historically male- dominated industry, but the picture is improving year on year.”
Ms Rae added: “Our belief is that the focus
on promoting engineering as a career path for women should start as early as possible. By bringing roles within the engineering industry to the attention of children of primary school age, we hope that more women will seek to join the RACHP sector in the future.” The IOR first established its UK-wide network to promote women in RACHP on International Women in Engineering Day 2016. The Women in RACHP Network is open to anyone working in a engineering-related role, including service and maintenance, design, research, sales, marketing, administration and training.
Star Refrigeration’s PR and marketing manager Astrid Prado played a key role in establishing and building the Women in RACHP Network. She was a driving force behind a recently published survey, which addresses the gender gap in the RACHP sector by outlining current attitudes towards women and barriers to equality. The Women in RACHP Network is now calling
on the industry to invest heavily in initiatives aimed at creating an ideal working environment for women to thrive.
As well as equal pay, recruitment and promotion initiatives, the group is calling for an industry-wide standardisation of flexible working benefits to support the needs of a modern, diverse workforce. You can find out more about the Women in RACHP Network and the planned career event here:
