Agrial sees new chillers installed for cold store
A
grial Fresh Produce is part of one of the world’s leading food processing co- operative groups. From its warehouse and cold store in Wigan, Greater Manchester, pre-packed salad and vegetable products are transported across the UK. To cope with business growth the company has built a new dispatch and storage area on the site.
J & E Hall provides refrigeration maintenance support for Agrial Fresh Produce and as part of the project they recommended that two new refrigeration systems be installed on the 234m2 ground fl oor.
Agrial Fresh Produce liked J & E Hall’s vision for the project and expertise in the food processing sector. J & E Hall off ers a unique range of services to help refrigerate, chill, store and freeze food products. This includes the supply of equipment and extends to design, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning. The company has wide experience of working with a range of diff erent refrigerants including ammonia, CO2, hydrocarbons and HFCs.

Rob Morris, J & E Hall Sales and Application Engineer for the North West, designed and installed the new systems. He said: “Two systems were necessary because of the size of the chilled area on the ground fl oor – a single refrigeration system would not have been able to cope. “To maximise the use of space in the building the indoor units are ceiling-mounted beneath a newly-created mezzanine area used for the storage of goods kept at ambient temperatures.” Produce arrives in the dispatch area at the warehouse and is stored on the ground fl oor at +2°C. Typically during a busy day, around eight lorries will arrive and leave the warehouse with produce for the supermarkets.
Two Bitzer 35 kilowatt condensing units have been installed to serve the ground fl oor chilling area. Each has a dual discharge evaporator, independent temperature controls and a common power source. To ensure produce is stored correctly before it’s dispatched, temperatures on site can be monitored on a laptop or mobile phone.
Both systems run on the refrigerant R449A – a low GWP alternative to the much-used but high GWP R404A. The use of a low-GWP refrigerant impressed the customer as this increases the longevity of the system by meeting the requirements of the F-Gas Regulation.
Agrial Fresh Produce wanted to bring the dispatch side of the business in-house at Wigan to improve effi ciencies throughout the warehousing operation but could only do this by redeveloping the site.
To achieve this a chilled area was created to handle the perishable produce but ambient storage facilities for less sensitive goods which already existed in the old warehouse had to be maintained.
The new refrigeration systems introduced further savings to the warehousing operation. They are able to revert to off -cycle defrosts to improve effi ciencies by reducing load. This helps to maintain the integrity of the coils and increases longevity.
