REFRIGERANTS

Poultry producer praises productivity/ sustainability win-win

In addition to managing under Covid-19 restrictions, European manufacturers should be replacing refrigerants that have Global Warming Potential (GWP) of above 2500, which were banned in certain static refrigeration applications under the European Union’s F-Gas legislation that came into force on 01 January 2020. Marek Mierzwinski, head of project sales support, refrigeration technologies, GEA Poland, explains how food companies can kill two birds with one stone.

W 26 December 2020

e at GEA Refrigeration Technologies believe that complying with the EU legislation on refrigerants also provides the perfect opportunity for food manufacturers, processors and cold storage facilities to not only replace their refrigeration systems, but also to reassess their entire processes and look for other ways to help reduce emissions, improve energy effi ciency and meet sustainability targets.

Most cooling systems using greenhouse gases have to be replaced with those that can handle natural refrigerants, such as ammonia – an environmentally-friendly refrigerant that has no impact on global warming or ozone depletion – to comply with the EU’s F-Gas legislation, which will continue to apply in the UK after Brexit.

Thanks to the improvements in compressor technology, ammonia heat pumps can now produce higher temperatures. This has paved the way for their more widespread use in the food, beverage and dairy industries, where waste heat can be reused and boosted for washing, cleaning and drying products; heating water for cleaning and processing purposes, as well as pasteurisation.

GEA has already installed ammonia-based refrigeration systems for major food manufacturers, including Wipasz, one of the largest Polish feed producers and leader in the production of fresh chicken meat, at its state-of-the-art poultry plant in Międzyrzec.

The cooling systems require around half of the plant’s energy capacity: immediately after the slaughtering process
